O God, You in whom we hope forever and ever,

Free the one who has spent a year imprisoned.

O Builder of the world upon seven celestial spheres,

Who holds its sea back from humankind, lest they be engulfed.

    O Ever-Living, O Worshipped One, O Lord of angels,

O You whose will joins kaf and nun.

By the honor of the chosen Prophet, the first of Your creation,

And by Mecca, the Sanctuary, and those who visit,

Free those imprisoned here and there,

By the four spiritual Poles and the Cause of existence.

If each person has needs and someone to come to his aid,

Our needs lie with them, even while they are absent.

Do not leave us among foreigners and Turks,

O you whom He enabled to know hidden things.

We are your flocks, without doubt or misgiving,

And you watch over the servant’s innermost intentions.

Stretch out to us a rope of hooks and snares.

Those founded on treachery from the start have betrayed us.

We have fallen as a noble falcon falls into nets.

We ask God to replace hardship with ease.

O rider aboard a towering, lofty vessel,

O steamer, built by a master, cutting the journey short,

    عقب أَربعة تلفي عبيروت مضمون

    Leave Izmir as the time for your journey approaches;

Four days later, you will surely reach Beirut.

Mount the one adept at crossing the open desert,

Like a male ostrich gone wild when it spies a figure.

By noon, your journey will bring you near Damascus.

Abu Rashida, deliver the news with skill.

Seek out its gathering places; may God guide you.

Greet those who know the heart’s affliction.

Abu Hasan, since the day we left you—

By the life of my Lord, Creator of high and low—

Not a day passes but my heart’s longing calls to you.

And my tears stream down the slopes of my cheeks.

    بَلكي ليالي البيض ياخي يَلفون

    I hope for a glimpse of your face;

Perhaps bright nights will come again, my brother.

Oh, my anguish, if your destination lies far away!

Oh, the fire in my heart when you come to mind!

Brother, beware those who wear red fezzes.

Even if they give, after their gifts they remain the same.

Even if they spread broadcloth for you, it is not for you.

Thorns are better than the bedding they spread.

Their foundations were built on shame; that is how they repaid you.

Sons of baseness, they do not know their own origins.

May God free us from prison, and you along with us.

And we shall swear off service with a thousand oaths and pledges.

I commend it to whoever among the rulers reads it:

Those with somewhere to go should leave the Turks behind.

And I end my words with that Hashimite Prophet:

May he intercede for us the day all creatures stand.
