How often a heart has quailed and trembled at the tidings!

And how often an eye has been veiled by its streaming tears!

Its mounting grievances have overwhelmed my patience,

So I call upon God, my Creator, for relief from its streaming tears.

    وَلا راحَةَ بِالفكر عَنها وَلا لَها

    My affliction is my delirium, and those glances are my own;

My thoughts find no rest from them, nor for them.

At times they whisper to me to soothe my heart,

And at times there is no solace from them, nor for them.

    سطرتها باك بدمع محالها

    I inscribed my words with the eye's tears;

I inscribed them weeping, with tears from the eye's wellsprings.

I still the frenzies of longing within my heart,

Then the surges of my breast erupt from where they lie.

When I saw the Bey lying upon his back,

And recalled the qualities of his customary ways in all their perfection,

Bound by death's cords, laid low by it—

Alas, that dignity should wither in its fullness!

Alas, after the medals and the banner,

Whose favor once shone upon that face!

And alas, after those lofty buildings were raised,

Today he spends the evening in a grave facing them.

Alas, the lion's cub lies upon the dust!

The clan's pride spends the evening in a grave before it.

Alas, the lion's cub lies upon the dust!

The clan's strength whenever its burden proved hard to lift.

No plight but he changed it through resolve,

And no hardship but he hastened to meet it.

    The reins of every affair lay in his hands;

If he wished, he straightened them; if he wished, he bent them.

After all that glory, the grave enfolds him.

Cursed be this world and its frustrated hopes!

Come, daughters of the clan, chant and lament

For a countenance on which parting had no pity.

If my eye has not wept for it and I have not lamented it,

Then no one present has failed to weep and mourn for it.

O visitors to the house, as soon as you arrive,

O friends, ask the house what ails it.

If only Shibli could be found within its grounds,

Even by ransom, though all its wealth were spent!

And he who built and honored it had not been absent from it!

No distress arose but he appeared and rallied to its aid.

O lord of glory, its father and grandfather,

You are its kinsman, and you are its maternal uncle.

He was never absent from it, roaming it from morning,

From its east to its west and to its north,

Lordly and swaying, in pleasure and serenity,

He strode proudly with a swaying gait, to its right and left.

Today the memory lives on of him who journeyed and departed

Into the Merciful's mercy, to dwell in its shade.

He withdrew from his homeland by command of the Guardian,

And left this world behind, forsaking its shade.

And today Yahya Bey, with generosity and praise,

After Abu Mahmoud, is equal to its burdens.

A strength to the house of honor, a wall encircling it,

And help keeps flowing to balance its burdens.

O Abu Hasan, fate's decree rules humankind—

A cup that makes the rounds of the world and its people.

Where are the kings? Where have their armies fled?

Where are the palaces? Where have their canopies gone?

If the Lord of the Throne wills a firm decree,

Who can oppose His power in its majesty?

There is no distress but a deliverer dispels it,

Nor any darkness without a dawn in all its splendor.

In this world we take our places like caravans:

Some people stop to camp, while others' camels move on.

    عَلى الحَي مثل الظل يَذهب جمالها

    It displays its sweetness and makes us drink its bitterness;

For the living, its beauty fades like a shadow.
