محيا على باي بن برقوقَ مشرقٌ

محيا على باي بن برقوقَ مشرقٌ

كبدرٍ سنىّ ليس بينهما فرقُ

كبدرٍ سنىّ ليس بينهما فرقُ

The face of Ali Bay, son of Barquq, is radiant,

Like a resplendent full moon—there is no difference between them.

فإن يكُ سباقا إلى الفضل والندا

فإن يكُ سباقا إلى الفضل والندا

فلا تعجبوا منه فوالده برقُ وق

فلا تعجبوا منه فوالده برقُ وق

So if he races ahead toward excellence and generosity,

Then do not marvel at him: his father is Barquq—“lightning” plus “ūq.”
