قل لشهاب الدين يا قانعا

قل لشهاب الدين يا قانعا

بالعقل كنزا والحيا قوتا

بالعقل كنزا والحيا قوتا

Say to Shihab al-Din: O you who are content

Tell Shahab al-Din, O content one,

with reason as treasure and modesty as sustenance,

With reason a treasure and life sustenance,

كم فقت في نظمك يا سيدي

كم فقت في نظمك يا سيدي

درا وفي خطك ياقوتا

درا وفي خطك ياقوتا

how greatly you have surpassed, in your verse, my lord,

How much pearl have you threaded in your stringing, my master,

pearls—and in your calligraphy, Yaqut!

And ruby in your line, O precious stone.
