ماnot قرعknocked البابthe door عليكat your place امرؤa man
ما قرع الباب عليك امرؤ
إلاexcept وذاقand tasted حلاوةsweetness القرعthe gourd (a pun on knocking)
إلا وذاق حلاوة القرع
No man has knocked at your door
No man has ever knocked on your door,
without tasting the sweetness of the gourd.
Except to taste the sweetness of knocking.
