فأبكيت المسائل والفتاوي

I wept for a young man resting in the grave,

I wept for a youth lying in his grave,

and made the questions and legal rulings weep.

So I wept for jurisprudence and religious decrees,

أبا العباس ذا الفضل المزكي

أبا العباس ذا الفضل المزكي

شهاب الدين أحمد الزواوي

شهاب الدين أحمد الزواوي

Abu al-Abbas, possessed of ennobling virtue,

O Father of Al-‘Abbas, of outstanding virtue,

Shihab al-Din Ahmad al-Zawawi.

Shihab al-Din Ahmad al-Zawawi,

ولم لم أرثه والعلم منه

ولم لم أرثه والعلم منه

إلى ركن شديد كان ياوي

إلى ركن شديد كان ياوي

And why should I not lament him, when learning found in him

Why did I not inherit knowledge from him,

a mighty pillar in which to take refuge?

To a pillar it leaned, sheltering,

حوى قصب السباق بلا مساو

حوى قصب السباق بلا مساو

نقى العرض ليس له مساوى

نقى العرض ليس له مساوى

He won the race's prize-reed, with no equal;

He grasped the forefront of the race without equal,

unblemished in honor, he had no faults.

Of pure reputation, he has no peer,

سما تنبيهه في ربع عام

سما تنبيهه في ربع عام

إلى إتقان منهاج النواوي

إلى إتقان منهاج النواوي

His study of the Tanbih advanced, within a quarter of a year,

His alertness rose in but a quarter year,

to mastery of al-Nawawi's Minhaj.

To perfection in the methods of al-Nawawi,

وكان ثمار روضته جنيا

وكان ثمار روضته جنيا

وكان مهذا للعلم حاوى

وكان مهذا للعلم حاوى

And the fruits of his garden were ripe for picking;

The fruits of his meadow were a harvest,

and he was refined [reading uncertain], encompassing knowledge.

And for knowledge he was a repository,

فلا عجب إذا احتجنا إليه

فلا عجب إذا احتجنا إليه

فلتبيان تحتاج الدعاوي

فلتبيان تحتاج الدعاوي

So it is no wonder if we need him,

No wonder that we need him,

for claims require clarification.

For explanation lawsuits require,

فروى الله تربته وأهدى

فروى الله تربته وأهدى

إليها رحمة من كل راوي

إليها رحمة من كل راوي

So may God water his grave's earth, and send

May Allah water his soil and guide

mercy to it from every reciter.

To it mercy from each speaker.
