    فهمُ الصالحونَ والأولياءُ

    Scholars, of all people, most deserve eminence;

    for they are the righteous and the saints.

    Masters whom the Lord of Majesty has praised,

    and praise of their like is sweet.

    Through them the sky sends rain, and from us

    evil is lifted and affliction passes away.

    أوَفى غيرهم يكونُ العلاءُ

    Fear of God is confined to them;

    and can eminence be found in anyone else?

    Among them are those who enjoin what is right and those who

    forbid what the foolish say.

    And before their Lord—hallowed in might—

    they are needy, yet through Him they are rich.

    والبرايا موتى وهم أحياءُ

    For creation is a body, and they are its soul;

    and all creatures are dead, while they are alive.

    حلّ منه الضنا وعزّ الشفاءُ

    So abstain from their flesh, for it is poison;

    from it comes wasting sickness, and a cure is elusive.

    أفتعمى عليهم الأنباءُ

    They have risen high in discernment and grown in intelligence;

    can news, then, remain hidden from them?

    I said to the ignorant man who disputes about them:

    Is discord's reward anything but misery?

    They are the cream of all creation, churned and pure,

    wherever they are—especially the reciters.

    How excellent the reciters, a delight to the eye!

    After their recitation comes emptiness.

    ولعمري هم للعيون ضياء

    We have seen that every age has its eyes;

    and, by my life, they are light to the eyes.

    They care nothing for what an ignorant fool says—

    is his speech a bray or a howl?

    And when the dog, in the darkness of the nights,

    barks on earth, the sky pays no heed.

    So let every ignorant fool incur misery,

    and let the scholars rest content in happiness.
