in the gardens of verse and prose.
ذوpossessed of ذكاءkeen wit فالعبيرso the perfume الرطبfresh منهbeside it
ذو ذكاء فالعبير الرطب منه
ضائعlost عندbefore طيبthe sweetness of ذاكthat العبيرperfume
ضائع عند طيب ذاك العبير
Endowed with keen wit—fresh perfume, beside it,
fades before the sweetness of that fragrance.
عجباhow strange! ليI have مكاتبa correspondent ورقيقand a slave
عجبا لي مكاتب ورقيق
معdespite أنىthe fact that I أحتاجneed للتدبيرmanumission upon the owner’s death
مع أنى أحتاج للتدبير
How strange: I have a correspondent and a slave,
though I myself need manumission.
ياO ابنson of شادShad مذsince شادbuilt up مدحكyour praise ذكرrenown
يا ابن شاد مذ شاد مدحك ذكر
قلتI said إنيindeed I منbefore حسنهits beauty فيin قصورِshortcoming
قلت إني من حسنه في قصورِ
O Ibn Shad, since your praise built up renown,
I said: I fall short of its beauty.
