And a night I spent, while slumber

trailed its hems within my eye,

when that night's Iblis came to me, offering

me all kinds of things with which he beguiles.

So he said to me, 'Would you like a lovely maiden,

whose cheeks hold the dawn and the star?'

I said, 'No.' He said, 'Nor a young gazelle,

who gazes with an eye that toys with reason?'

I said, 'No.' He said, 'Nor wine,

whose cup robes you in kingship when it is drunk?'

I said, 'No.' He said, 'Nor a handful

of green—for with it life is sweet?'

I said, 'No.' He said, 'Nor a singer,

who brings delight when he sings amid serenity?'

I said, 'No.' He said, 'Then sleep, turning away

from me, for you are a wearisome stone.'
