    وحَاشَاهُ من عينِ الحَسُود اعْتلُاؤهُ

    The sight of him dispelled the eclipse from the moon at its fullness;

    And his exalted rank shielded him from the envious one's eye.

    And brought him forth within the halo of beauty and splendor

    A conjunction of fortunate stars whose ending is not granted.

    God bless him—a moon whose light overspread

    A countenance whose morning and evening were alike.

    A comfort to the eyes of the lovesick, because

    When night grows pitch-black, the sight of him dispels it.

    If indeed my eye rejoiced in seeing his light,

    Then my heart's suffering in loving him is only just.

    And if concealing love is the heart's ailment,

    Then revealing love's secret is its cure.

    Whoever is wasted by a moonlike form,

    Though he concealed his longings, his wasting spoke out.

    وَمَنْ لِي بِبَدرٍ أسْعِدَتْ شهدَاؤُهُ

    He appeared, and his good fortune revived his martyrs;

    Who will bring me a moon whose martyrs are made happy?

    فَغَشَّى سَنَاهَا الأزْهَرِيَّ سنَاؤُهُ

    He reached fullness, and the sun rivaled him at forenoon;

    Then his splendor veiled its brilliant radiance.

    How could the sun surpass him in beauty, when its light's

    Radiance is ascribed to his resplendent countenance?

    And why not, when the rays of his face have been extended

    By the brightness of our lord, whose splendor is exalted?

    Abu Amr, the most exalted sovereign, who brought healing to

    His subjects' hearts through his recovery and restoration.

    A man of might and bounty, the valiant one, who swept away

    The darkness of tyranny from us through his justice and fidelity.

    وَلاَ الشَّمْس إلاَّ وَجهه وَضيَاؤُهُ

    For the full moon is nothing but his beauty and his qualities,

    Nor the sun anything but his face and his radiance;

    وَلاَ النجم إلاَّ فهمه وَذكَاؤُهُ

    Nor beauty anything but his very being and his nature,

    Nor the star anything but his understanding and intelligence;

    وَلاَ المسك إلاَّ نَشْره وَثنَاؤُهُ

    Nor pearls anything but his speech and his smile,

    Nor musk anything but his fragrance and the praise of him;

    وَلاَ الغيث إلاَّ جُوده وَسخَاؤُهُ

    Nor the lion anything but his might and his power,

    Nor rain anything but his generosity and his munificence;

    وَلاَ العَضْبُ إلاَّ عزمه وَمَضَاؤُهُ

    Nor lightning anything but his glance and his brow,

    Nor the keen sword anything but his resolve and decisiveness;

    وَلاَ العدل إلاَّ حكمه وَقَضَاؤُهُ

    Nor excellence anything but his forbearance and his liberality,

    Nor justice anything but his rule and his judgment;

    Nor pride anything but his clan and his sword-belt,

    Nor glory anything but his might and his ascent.

    A youth from whom all beauties sprang; high rose

    His eminence above the celestial sphere that reveals the stars.

    وَلاَ خَوَفَ مِنْ دَاءٍ تَلاَهُ دَوَاؤُهُ

    God bless him—a lord whose body fell ill;

    Yet no ailment is feared when its cure follows it.

    He fell ill only because he is water in delicacy,

    Or a flower in fragrance, showered upon by its sky,

    Or a lion in character, and a breeze in gentleness,

    Or a branch in suppleness, swayed by its gentle breeze.

    فَمَا رَقَّ إلا كَيْ يَرُوقَ صفَاؤُهُ

    It is no wonder that water's body grew delicate;

    It grew delicate only so its clarity might delight.

    Nor is it strange that the east wind's palm bent

    The curves of a branch too exalted to bow to it.

    The branch's side did not lean from any crookedness in it,

    But its proud grace bent it gently.

    Nor did the breeze sicken in the air because it was

    Ailing, but so its air might grow wholesome.

    Nor did the lovely flower wilt from illness,

    But so its fragrance and freshness might grow stronger.

    Nor was the cleaving sword polished because it bore rust,

    But so its polish and gleam might become clear.

    Nor did the forest lion burn with fever except as a trial

    In which his patience and contentment would be praised.

    Nor was the lofty full moon veiled because of its eclipse,

    But for some purpose that its concealment required.

    So you who hope for the brightening of his face,

    Glad tidings to you: the horizon's sun has appeared!

    And you, rebellious denier of his command,

    Woe to you: the time has come to draw the sword!

    God willed only to protect him with His kindness,

    And preserve him for an age, his continued life unenvied,

    And spare him the calamity of misfortunes through His favor,

    And grant him what cannot possibly be repaid.

    So He raised the sun of sovereignty to the zenith of its fortune,

    Upon an exalted height, its banner fluttering with victory.

    And favored the world with the return of a downpour,

    Abundant, for the people's sustenance is his giving.

    O lord whose rank is exalted,

    Whose worth is magnified and whom it is hard to meet,

    Whose sight is beloved and whose name is honored,

    Whose countenance shines and whose praise wafts abroad,

    I asked Him who saved Joseph from the well

    That His exalted majesty save you from the evil of calamities,

    And protect you through the Chosen One from an envier's schemes,

    Who knowingly misled others, and so suffered long.

    And surely a prayer whose seal was Ya-Sin

    Truly deserves that its hope should not fail.

    So live in safety whose passing is not feared,

    And remain in bounty whose ending is not expected,

    So that the tongues of wisdom may recite to listening ears:

    The sight of him dispelled the eclipse from the moon at its fullness.
