The setting stars were sheltered by your night journey.
The setting stars sought refuge in your abode,
And the piercing stars rejoiced at the sight of you.
And the piercing stars trembled at the sight of you.
وَهَامَتْand were enraptured بِذِكْرَىby the remembrance of مَجْدِكَyour glory السُّمْرُthe brown lances وَالظُّبَيand the sword-edges

And brown lances and sword-edges were enraptured by the remembrance of your glory.
The wild beasts and the beasts of prey were enamored with the memory of your glory,
And rain and tall steeds rejoiced to meet you.
And the living creatures and the creeping creatures rejoiced at meeting you.

And the world submitted to you, so the peaceable grew mighty,
The world submitted to you, so he who makes peace was honored,
Spring pasture grew fertile, and the warrior was humbled.
And he who wages war was humiliated and subdued.
لِتَعْلَمَso that you may know أنَّthat اللَّهَGod أنْجَزَfulfilled وَعْدَهُHis promise

So that you may know that God fulfilled His promise:
So that you may know that God fulfilled His promise,
The promise is not diminished, nor is the word false.
For the promise was not diminished, nor was the word a lie.
قَدِمْتَyou arrived قُدُومَwith the arrival of اللَّيْثِthe lion وَاللَّيْثُand the lion بَاسِلٌvaliant

You arrived as a lion arrives, a valiant lion,
You came with the coming of a lion, and the lion is mighty,
And came as a torrent comes, a torrent gathering timber.
You approached with the approach of a flood, and the flood is overwhelming.
وَمَاand not أنْتَyou إلاَّbut الْوَبْلُthe downpour لِيناًin gentleness وَشِدَّةand severity

You are nothing but a downpour, in gentleness and severity,
You are gentleness to one who seeks peace, and firmness against one who wages war.
For one seeking peace or a rebel waging war.
So you do not raise what you have lowered,
فَلاَso not تَرْفَعُraise الأيَّامُthe days مَاwhat أنْتَyou خَافِضٌbring low

Nor affirm what you have denied.
Nor can words cut short what you set upright,
You do not take away what you have given,

Nor prevent what you have sought.
Nor can princes withhold what you seek.

And who can argue with words and proof

While God's discourse supports you and responds on your behalf?
While God's decisive word answers on your behalf?
You are as you have always been - neither heedless of heart,

For you—may time guard you—have no heedless heart,
Nor bleary-eyed, nor mistaken in judgment.
No closed eye, and no failing judgment.
The most worthy of God's servants to hold authority

And, in rank, you are the worthiest of God's servants to rule,
Are those who assume those high positions.
When those ranks stand forth for kingship;
The firmest of them in resolve when the fighter attacks,

The steadiest of them in heart when an assailant charges,
The most generous of them in giving when the gracious one bestows,
And the most generous-handed when a giver gives,
The most faithful of them in covenant when the betrayer is treacherous,
وَأوْفَاهُمُand the truest of them عَهْداًin pledge إذَاwhen خَانَbetrays نَاكِثٌa pledge-breaker

And the truest of them to his pledge when a pledge-breaker betrays,
The soundest of them in judgment when the straying one is lost.
And the soundest of them in judgment when a traveler goes astray,
The most piercing of them in thrust when the assailant misses,
وَأطْعَنُهُمْand the best of them at thrusting نَحْراًat throats إذَاwhen خَابَfails طَاعِنٌa spearman

And the surest of them at piercing throats when a spearman fails,
The surest of them in blow when the striker falters.
And the best of them at striking heads when a striker slips.
So say to the descendants of Al-Farooq: Unsheathe your swords!
فَقُلْso say لِبَنِيto the sons of الفَارُوقِal-Faruq سُلُّواdraw سُيُوفَكُمْyour swords

So tell the sons of al-Faruq: Draw your swords,
For with them good fortune is made accessible and within reach.
For with them al-Mas'ud restrains and plunders.

Not everyone who meets armored champions can clash with them,
Nor is everyone who wields swords a combatant.
Nor is everyone who draws swords a swordsman.

As eyebrows are raised above the eyes.

Or when someone with a loose tongue retorts.

Companies with lowered banners carried beneath them.
Noble riders, beneath whom noble mounts strode.

His horses and riding camels—in nine nights.

Like ostriches of evenly matched feet or gazelles bounding forward.
Grazing ostriches or gazelles in herds.

Whether the back be broken or the omen unfavorable.
Their backs are not split, nor does a rival racer prevail [reading uncertain].

Clouds of victory, followed by clouds.

Studded for the white steeds with places to roam.
As ranks stood behind the banners,
You protected every pass from the confuse rabble -

With its sides adorned for their arrival with brown steeds.
And that the flashing lightnings were cutting blades.
They have no food but their swords, no drink but blood.

So every land, however vast, was straitened for them,
And their banners, from which calamities scatter,
And no fugitive escaped what God had decreed.

And brown spear-shafts that turn scorpions yellow.
For an offender when asked: where are the places of refuge?

With no fortress but swift, roaming steeds,
Save the cave of clemency erected by divine gifts.

You established the prayer of war in the mosque of battle,
They came to you submissively, hoping for pardon and favor,
With heads as your pulpit and the sword as preacher.
Their tears flowing upon their cheeks.

So you pardoned their grave sins,
Set with nocked shafts, where white blades found their paths.
And one like you does not strike one who repents.

And who can escape when you are the pursuer?
With clouds of gifts and kindnesses.

You entrusted the Lord of Authority, the expected High One,
On all its sides with brown lances for their arrival.
With aiding them, and He is the prevailing Imam.

So magnify through him a glory as great as his glory,
And no drink but death.
Around which hopes revolve or to which lofty aspirations descend.

Every land, despite its breadth, grew narrow for them,
Among a people who are the knights of eloquence and valor,
And no fugitive escaped what God had decreed.
Truly men of prowess and imposing power.

And when they punish we say: fierce lions.

Theirs are the plains of life and the quintessence of humanity,
Their tears pouring down their cheeks.
The aspirations of nobility, the high and the low.

So you granted pardon for their grievous sins,
O you who possess what is beautiful and preserve what is sublime,
And one such as you does not treacherously kill a penitent.
To whose perfection the lofty enterprises aspire.
وَأوْسَتْعَهُمْand you encompassed them حِلْماًwith forbearance وَأمْطَرْتَand you rained upon أرْضَهُمْtheir land
بِسُحْبِwith clouds of هِبَاتٍgifts وَبْلُهُنَّwhose downpour الرَّغَائِبُthe desired favors
And you embraced them in forbearance, and rained upon their land
I congratulate you on the blessed Eid, and indeed
With clouds of gifts whose downpour was all they desired.
I congratulate it because it has received your kindness.
وَأوْصَيْتَand you instructed رَبَّthe lord of الأمْرِaffairs مُنْتَظَرَexpected to attain العُلَىeminence
بِإسْعَافِهِمْto aid them وَهْوَand he is الإمَامُthe imam المُغَالِبُthe prevailing
And you urged the lord of affairs, of whom greatness is expected,
So you have congratulated it a thousandfold and more,
To aid them—he, the victorious imam.
Until you are called to rest or the reckoning is forgotten.
فَأعْظِمْso how great بِهِhe is مَجْداًin glory بِكَعْبَةِaround the Kaaba of مَجْدِهِhis glory
تَطُوفُcircle الأمَانِيthe hopes أوْor تَحُطُّhalt الرَّكَائِبُthe riding camels
How great he is in glory! Around the Kaaba of his glory
The servant has brought to your door eulogy like
Hopes circle, or riding camels halt.
A sky adorned in its lofty heights with stars.
مِنَof القَوْمِthe people فُرْسَانِhorsemen of البَلاَغَةِeloquence وَالْوَغَىand battle
عَلَىwithal أنَّهُمthey are صِيدٌproud-necked رِجَالٌmen أغَالِبُmighty
He is of a people who are horsemen of eloquence and battle,
For if the poets are counted, I am counted among the poets,
And withal they are proud, mighty men.
And if the writers are counted, I am counted among the writers.
إذَاwhen أوَّبُواthey travel by day قُلْنَاwe say شُمُوسٌsuns طَوَالِعٌrising

When they travel by day, we say: Rising suns,
It is you who have helped me, enabling me to do it,
And if they travel by night, we say: Piercing stars,
For without guidance the difficult paths would not be clear.
وَإنْand if أنْعَمُواthey grant favors قُلْنَاwe say غُيُوثٌrains هَوَاطِلٌpouring

And if they grant favors, we say: Pouring rains,
Grant me then a boon whose clouds have gathered,
And if they take vengeance, we say: Triumphant lions.
So that mounted and on foot may envy me.
لَهُمْtheirs is وَاضِحُthe brightness of الدُّنْيَاthe world وَإنْسَانُand the pupil of عَيْنِهَاits eye

The world's brightness and the pupil of its eye are theirs,
You remain forever, however much the doves may sing,
And the crowns of noble deeds, the summits and the crests.
The breezes blow, and the clouds pour down.
فَيَاso O مَالِكَmaster of الحُسْنَىgoodness وَيَاand O شَائِدَbuilder of النُّهَىwisdom

So, O master of goodness, and O builder of wisdom,
That the world may thrive through you and the heights prosper through you,
And O you toward whose bounty riding camels are driven,
That you may be guided to what is beautiful and what is demanded turned away.

May you be congratulated on it a thousand times, and as many again,
Until the full count is reached, or the reckoner loses his way.

To your gate the servant offered praise, as though it were
A sky in whose heights the stars shine forth.

For when poets are counted, I am indeed a poet,
And when writers are counted, I am indeed a writer.

You are the one who aided me, so I composed it;
And without guides, the open plains cannot be discerned.

So grant me a bounty whose clouds vie with one another,
So that those on foot and those mounted may envy me for it.
