واضِحُbright النُورِin radiance زوىdrew back فَضْلَthe trailing edge of النِّقابْthe veil
واضِحُ النُورِ زوى فَضْلَ النِّقابْ
عَنْfrom سَنَاthe brilliance of الشَّرقْthe east
عَنْ سَنَا الشَّرقْ
The radiant one drew back the veil’s trailing edge
The light's clarity removed the veil
from the brilliance of the east,
From the radiance of the east,
وَنَضَاand unsheathed فيin الجَوّthe sky منْfrom غِمْدِthe scabbard of السحابْthe clouds
وَنَضَا في الجَوّ منْ غِمْدِ السحابْ
صَارِمَthe keen sword of البَرقْlightning
صَارِمَ البَرقْ
and in the sky unsheathed from the clouds’ scabbard
And lightning blades flashed in the air
the keen sword of lightning.
From clouds' sheaths set free,
وروىand recounted فيin الأيْكthe grove عنof وقْعِthe notes of الرَّبابْthe rebab (bowed string instrument)
وروى في الأيْك عن وقْعِ الرَّبابْ
صادِحُthe singer among الوُرْقthe gray doves
صادِحُ الوُرْق
And in the grove told of the rebab’s notes
While leaves told of tambourines’ tap
the singer among the gray doves.
In the grove’s verdant drape.
