The horizon's mouth smiled, revealing dawn's pearly freshness,

So it stirred my longings for the one with dusky lips.

And the east wind's hand tore the anemones' robes,

Just as the river's hand tore open the gardens' bosom.

And the forenoon's caller lamented upon the boughs,

So dew's tears wandered in the flowers' eyes.

And the tender narcissus's eyes drooped when

The flowers' mouth smiled, revealing beads of rain.

And myrtle's cheek-down crept across the rose of its cheek,

Just as shadow's temple-lock wandered across the river's cheek.

And the pomegranate blossoms' breasts displayed rays,

Set within their dusky green boughs.

In a garden that unveiled a sky of emerald,

Upon which stars of raw gold had risen.

And where the Heart withdrew after it, fluttering,

Like a grieving heart stricken by a calamity of time.

And where the Sons of the Bier yearn for their bier,

As a longing exile yearned for his nest.

And where the Fish's swimmer complains to the darkness

Of his anguish, as a drowning man complains to the sea.

And where al-Suhā grew thin from the greatness of its longing

To see the full moon on the fourteenth night.

And where Suhayl follows Zuhrah's trail,

Like a driver of she-camels looking out over a wilderness.

And where the bright stars of al-Haq‘ah brought forth

An army's vanguard that had journeyed by night in fear.

And where you see Sirius the Crossing One, now appearing,

Drawing its eyelids together to scatter its tears.

And where you see Orion on the horizon of its setting,

A silver sash wound around a waist.

And where the Pleiades in the sky seem to be

Necklaces of pearls displayed upon a neck.

And where you see the Crown at the forenoon's hair-parting,

Rosebud sheaths that masked the Eagle's faces.

And where radiance transmits its light from the full moon,

From the sun, from the face of King Abū ‘Amr.

The greatest of them in glory, the broadest in wealth,

And closest to forbearance, farthest from treachery.

Generous: his deeds and words have endowed us

With generosity's rain, pouring from the cloud of goodness.

They find his two hands' generosity more copious than rain.

And if praise-singers seek to set down his praise,

His qualities dictate, and their pens flow.

Excellence related reports of piety from his perfection,

As sweet fragrance disclosed what the hills concealed.

From lightning, from the bright stars, from the full moon.

And concealed out of forbearance, and revealed out of good cheer.

The nobles acknowledge its eminence without denial.

And if they trade in nobility and bid ever higher,

The most precious gift offered them is poetry's jewel.

Who deems you above receiving praise without bounty.

Complained of a fellow bondsman to the benevolent king.

So take it, each robe striped with devotion,

Perfumed at the sleeves with praise and gratitude.

On the death of God's enemy, the tyrant of unbelief.

Thus putting the pearl necklace and the radiant star to shame.

And how can onyx be compared in beauty with the full moon?

Its closing days return to the beginning of an age.

By words, your prohibitions obeyed and your commands fulfilled.
