ذَكَرَremembered الفُؤَادُthe heart حَبِيبَهُits beloved فَارْتَاحَاand so rejoiced
وَأهَاجَهُand stirred it نَوْحُthe lament الحَمَامِthe doves فَنَاحَاand so lamented
The heart recalled its beloved and rejoiced.
The heart recalled its beloved, so it found peace,
And the doves' lament stirred it, and it lamented.
And was stirred by the lament of doves, so it moaned,
وَأعَارَهُand lent it البَرْقُthe lightning الخَفُوقُflickering طُرُوبَهُits rapture
فَلِذَاكَso for that reason طَارَflew وَمَاand did not اسْتَعَارَborrowed جَنَاحَاa wing
And the flickering lightning lent it its rapture,
Lightning lent it a flash of delight,
So it flew and borrowed no wing.
So it took flight without needing to borrow wings.
وَأمَدَّهُand sustained it صَوْبَthe downpour الغَمَامِthe clouds كَأنَّهُas though it
أنْشَاraised بِقَلْبِin the heart of الخَافِقَيْنِthe two horizons رِيَاحَاwinds
And the clouds' downpour sustained it, as though it
It soared towards the clouds as though
Had raised winds in the heart of the two horizons.
It breathed life into the throbbing winds.
وَأضَلَّهُand led it astray هَدْيُthe guidance النجُومِthe stars عَشِيَّةًone evening
وَأعَلَّهُand sickened it بَرْءُthe healing النَّسِيمِthe breeze صَبَاحَاin the morning
And the stars' guidance led it astray one evening,
The guidance of stars in the evening misled it,
And the breeze's healing sickened it in the morning.
And the breeze of morn lifted it at dawn.
وَصَغَىand listened لِتَغْرِيدِto the singing الحَمَامِthe doves فَهَاجَهُthen stirred it
بَرْقٌlightning بِأكْنَافِin the environs of الأبَيْرِقِal-Ubayriq لاَحَاflashed
And it listened to the doves' song, then was stirred by
It listened to the warbling of doves, so it was stirred
Lightning that flashed around al-Ubayriq.
By lightning in the folds of clouds flashing.
وَأعَادَand brought back مِنْfrom ذِكْرَىremembrance حَبِيبٍa beloved مَوْقِفاًa scene
أَضْنىexhausted الجُسُومَthe bodies وَانْعَشَand revived الأرْوَاحَاthe souls
And from remembrance of a beloved it brought back a scene
It recalled a stance with a loved one
That exhausted bodies and revived souls.
That revived the withered and refreshed the weary.
هَلاَّwhy not نَهَاهُrestrained it نُهَاهُits reason عَنْfrom ذِكْرِrecollection الهَوَىlove
فَأرَاحَand so gave relief مِنْfrom قَوْلِthe words العَذُولِthe reproacher وَرَاحَاand rested
Why did its reason not keep it from recalling love,
Why didn’t you forbid it from remembering passion
So it might escape the reproacher's words and find rest?
So it could have rested from blaming and eased?
يَاO عَاذِلِيmy reproacher لاَnot ذُقْتَyou tasted مَاwhat أنَاI ذَائِقٌtasting
مِنْof حُزْنِgrief قَلْبٍa heart لاَزَمَclung to الأتْرَاحَاthe sorrows
O my reproacher, you have not tasted what I taste
O reproacher! You have not tasted what I now taste
Of the grief of a heart that has clung to sorrows.
Of the sorrow of a heart that clings to anguish.
وَعَدَتْكَand passed you by أشْجَانُthe sorrows الهَوَىlove وَشُؤُونُهُand its cares
وَعَدِمْتَand you lacked رُشْداًsound judgment بَعْدَهُafter it وَفَلاَحَاand success
And love's sorrows and its cares have passed you by,
The passions of love and its misfortunes have evaded you,
And thereafter you lacked sound judgment and success.
And you lacked insight after it and success.
أتَظُنَّdo you think أنَّthat العَذْلَreproach يَنْفَعُbenefits مَنْone who يَرَىsees
أنْthat لاَnot يَرَىhe sees لِفَسَادِهِfor his ruin إصْلاَحَاa remedy
Do you think reproach helps one who sees
Do you think reproach benefits one who sees
That for his ruin he sees no remedy?
That there is no mending his corruption?
هَبْsuppose أنَّthat عَذْلَكَyour reproach مُؤْذِنٌis indicative بِنَصِيحَةٍof advice
أرَأيْتَhave you seen صَبَّاًa lovesick man يَألَفُis fond of النُّصَّاحَاthe advisers
Suppose your reproach conveys advice:
Grant that your reproach hints at good advice,
Have you seen a lovesick man fond of advisers?
Have you ever seen a morning breeze befriend advisers?
فَدَعِso abandon التَّعَتُّبَreproaching وَاطَّرِحْand cast aside نُصْحِيadvising me فَمَاfor not
كُلِّفْتَyou were charged with لِيfor me الإسْعَادَbringing happiness وَالإفْلاَحَاand bringing success
So cease reproaching and abandon advising me, for
So stop complaining and reject my advice, for
You were not charged with securing my happiness and success.
You were not tasked with bringing me joy and success.
وَبِمُهْجَتِيand with my heart's blood تَغْرِيدُsong قُمْرِيّa turtledove حَكَىmimicked
ثَكْلاَءَa bereaved mother أيْقَظَتِawakened النِّيَامَthe sleepers صِيَاحَاwith cries
And I would give my heart's blood for a turtledove's song that mimicked
And my consolation is the warbling of my moon, whose tale
A bereaved mother who woke the sleepers with her cries,
Woke the slumbering with screams at dawn,
فِيin رَوْضَةٍa garden حَاكَwove الرَّبِيعُspring لِخُودِهَاfor its maiden
حُلَلاًfine robes وَصَاغَand fashioned لَهَاfor her الخَلِيجُthe stream وِشَاحَاa sash
In a garden where spring wove for its maiden
In a garden where Spring adorned its cheeks
Fine robes, and the stream fashioned her a sash.
With gowns and the bay wove it a wrap.
وَأعَارَهَاand lent her الاصبَاحُdaybreak بَهْجَتَهُits splendor كَذاَthus
تَلْقَىyou meet بِهَاin it غِيدَgraceful maidens الزُّهُورِthe flowers صِبَاحَاfair-faced
And dawn lent her its splendor; thus
Dawn lent it his radiance, so that
You meet there the graceful flower-maidens, fair of face.
It met with the song of flowers in the morning.
قَدْindeed مِسْنَthey swayed قُضْباًas slender shoots وَابْتَهَجْنَand they rejoiced شَقَائقاًas anemones

They have swayed as slender shoots and rejoiced as anemones,
It touched on mint and jasmines were delighted,
And unveiled themselves as roses and smiled as daisies.
It traveled roses and carnations smiled.
وَتَبَسَّمَتْand smiled أزْهَارُهَاits blossoms لَمَّاwhen جَرَىflowed

And its blossoms smiled when there flowed
Its flowers smiled when the teardrops of clouds flowed
The clouds' tears over the plains, streaming freely.
Over the sand and wandered freely.
وَتَمَايَلَتْand swayed أغْصَانُهَاits branches طرباًin rapture كَمَاas

And its branches swayed in rapture, as
Its branches swayed in rapture as though
Black women swayed after being given wine.
Swaying branches quenched by the winds.
