Pass the wine around, for the breeze sings of love,

and the clouds water the garden, so it drinks.

And morning has cast off its veil to see

how the face of night is veiled by dawn.

And the sky is silver-cloaked, yet it

has gained a gilded border through lightning.

    وَمِنَ العَجَائِبِ نظمُ مَالاَ يُثْقَبُ

    And the great trees' branch-blossoms have been strung;

and among wonders is stringing what has not been pierced.

And the rose bears on its cheeks, from the forenoon sun,

a blush; and the daisy's mouth has gleaming white teeth.

And the east wind bends the branch, as though it were

a lovesick lover whom the hands of passion toy with.

And the cock has cried 'Come!' at dawn, calling to prayer,

and the birds preach on a branch of the arak trees.

So behold the wine-cup in its taverns,

among delightful youths, so the drinking is delightful.

    وَالراحُ شَمْسٌ وَالزُّجَاجَةُ كَوْكَبُ

    For the tavern is a garden, and the cupbearers blossoms;

and the wine is a sun, and the glass a star.

In the mouth its rim sets, yet

in the sky of cheeks its radiance never sets.

Yellow in the cups, yet it is

red in the cheeks—a fire set ablaze.

Yellow, it has battled fortune's reversals—do you not see

its cups stained with the blood of cares?

How wondrous it is—like fire, except that it

is not quenched by water, but flares up.

From the palm of one with honeyed lips, whose saliva

is more delectable to me than wine, and sweeter—

a moon who shows you, in his cheek and cheek-down,

a dawn that shone bright when deep darkness overspread it.

I would ransom him—a moon dwelling in my heart—

yet he veils himself from my gaze.

His cheek is ascribed to Laqan; for that reason

its apples are dyed with the blood of hearts.

And the gleaming sword-edges claim descent from his glance, just as

the brown, tall spears are ascribed to his stature.
