مُبِينَrevealer of الحُسْنِbeauty مُخْفِيhiding; eclipsing الفَرْقَدَيْنِthe two Farqad stars
مَتَىwhen تَقْضِيwill you repay بِلَثْمِby kissing الفَرْقِthe hair's parting دَيْنِيmy debt
O revealer of beauty, eclipsing the two Farqad stars,
Revealer of beauty, concealer of two moles,
when will you settle my debt by letting me kiss your hair's parting,
When will you fulfill my debt with a kiss between the moles?
وَأرْشُفُand I sip كَأسَthe cup of مبسمكَyour smiling mouth المُفَدَّىcherished; ransomed
وَأقطِفُand I pluck وَرْدَthe roses of تِلْكَthose الْوَجْنَتَيْنِthe two cheeks
and sip the cup of your adored smiling mouth,
I savored the cup of your sweet smile,
and pluck the roses of those two cheeks,
And plucked the rose of your two gardens.
وَأهْصِرُand I bend غُصْنَthe bough of قَامَتِكَyour stature الْمُوَقَّىprotected; spared
مِنَfrom التَّشْبِيهِcomparison بِالرُّمْحِwith the spear الرُّدَيْنِيRudayni
and bend the bough of your stature, protected
I bent the branch of your shapely stature,
from comparison with the Rudayni spear?
Likened to a slim, bending spear.
فَدَيْتُكَI would ransom you يَاO شَقِيقَbrother; twin الحُورِthe houris إنِّيindeed I
جَعَلْتُكَI have made you فِيin الْهَوَىlove إنْسَانَthe pupil of عَيْنِيmy eye
I would ransom you, O brother of the houris; indeed, I
I sacrificed myself for you, oh cheeky Houri,
have made you, in love, the pupil of my eye.
I made you the human of my eye's passion.
فَلِمْso why حَرَّكْتَdid you stir يَاO سَكَنِيmy repose سُكُونِيmy stillness
إلَىtoward تَلَفٍruin يُبَيَّنُis made evident بَعْدَafter بَيْنِseparation
So why, O my repose, did you stir my stillness
So why did you stir, oh my peace, my tranquility,
toward ruin made plain after separation?
To a clear separation after closeness?
وَخَالَفْتَand you defied الَقِيَاسَthe rule; analogy بِكَسْرِby breaking قَلْبِيmy heart
عَلَىdespite عَدَمِthe absence of الْتِقَاءِthe meeting of السَّاكِنَيْنِthe two still ones; two vowelless letters
And you defied the rule by breaking my heart,
You broke convention by breaking my heart,
though the two still ones had not met.
Despite the rule against joining two quiescents.
لِعَامِلِfor the force of مقلتيكَyour two eyes عَلَىupon فُؤَادِيmy heart
تَعَادِيthe mutual clash of العَامِلَيْنِthe two spearheads; two grammatical governors الْمَاضِيَيْنِthe two piercing ones; two past-tense ones
The power of your two eyes upon my heart
Due to your glance's influence on my heart,
is the clash of two piercing spearheads.
Opposing the two preceding agents.
وَفِيand in عِطْفَيْكَyour two flanks حَارَgrew bewildered الطَّرْفُthe gaze لماwhen
هَزَزْتَyou swayed الأعْزَلَيْنِthe two unarmed ones الرَّامِحَيْنِthe two spear-bearers
And at your two flanks the gaze grew bewildered when
In your side-glance, the eye was confused when
you swayed those two unarmed, spear-wielding sides.
You shook the two slender, thrusting spears.
وَفِيand on خَدَّيْكَyour two cheeks صَاغَfashioned الحُسْنُbeauty لاَمًاa letter lām
عَلَىupon لَوْحَيْنِtwo tablets مِنْof وَرَقٍsilver وَعَيْنِand gold
And on your two cheeks Beauty fashioned a lām
And in your cheek, beauty crafted a lam,
upon two tablets of silver and gold.
On two panels of paper and eye.
وصحَّحand set right نُقْطَتَيْthe two dots of خَالَيْكَyour two moles لَمَّاwhen
رَأىhe saw خَطَّthe line of اسْتَوَاءِalignment العَارِضَيْنِthe two cheek-beards
And he set right the two dots of your two moles when
It corrected the two dots of your moles when
he saw the aligned line of the two cheek-beards.
It saw the line of leveling of the two brows.
فخِلْتso I supposed مُهَنْدِسَاan engineer قَدْalready خَطَّtraced شَكْلاًa figure
عَلَىon تَرْبِيعِthe squaring of سَطْحِthe surface of النُّقْطَتَيْنِthe two points
So I thought him an engineer who had traced a figure
So I imagined an architect who drew a shape
on the squared surface of the two points.
On squaring the surface of the two dots.
وَأعْجَمَand added distinguishing dots to بَعْدَafter نَقْطِdotting اللاَّمِthe letter lām حُسْنًاbeautifully
بِمِسْكِwith the musk of الخَالِthe beauty-spot نُونَthe letter nūn of الحَاجِبَيْنِthe two eyebrows
And after dotting the lām, he beautifully dotted
And it obscurely crafted after the lam dot, beauty
the nūn of the two brows with the mole's musk.
With the musk of the mole, the nun of the two brows.
أمَاindeed; behold وَعِذَارِby the cheek-down of خَدّكَyour cheek يَاO حَبِيبِيmy beloved
وَرَشْفِand by sipping رضَابِthe sweet saliva of كَاسِthe cup of المِرْشَفَيْنِthe two lips
Indeed, by the down along your cheek, O my beloved,
By the excuse of your cheek, my love,
and by sipping the sweet saliva from the cup of the two lips,
And the sipping of the cup of the two sipped.
لَئِنْif indeed نُسِبَis ascribed القَوَامُthe stature إلَىto رَشِيقٍRashiq; graceful
فَقَدْthen surely نُسِبَis ascribed المُحَيَّاthe face لِلْحُسَيْنِto al-Husayn
if the stature is ascribed to Rashiq,
If posture was attributed to a graceful one,
the face is surely ascribed to al-Husayn.
Shyness was attributed to the beautiful.
وَإنْand if سَكَنَhas settled الهَوَىlove جَنْبَيْthe two sides of فُؤَادِيmy heart
فَقَدْthen surely سَكَنَhas settled الهَوَىlove فِيin الخَافِقَيْنِthe two horizons (east and west)
And if love has settled on both sides of my heart,
If passion resided in the sides of my heart,
love has surely settled in the two horizons.
Passion resided in the two pulsating ones.
وَإنْand if هَجَرَhas deserted الكَرَىsleep وَالصبْرُand patience فَاكْتُبْthen write
تَوَارِيخَthe dates of اللِّقَاmeeting بِالهِجْرَتَيْنِby the two departures (hijras)
And if sleep and patience have deserted me, then write
And if intimacy and patience have deserted, then write
the dates of meeting by the two departures.
The dates of meeting with the two partings.
وَبِيand I am smitten with رَشَأa young gazelle رَشِيقَslender القَدّstature أحْوَىdark-eyed; dusky

And I am smitten with a fawn, slender of stature, dark-eyed,
In me is an inclination to the shapely, slender one
inscribed of cheek and languid of both eyes,
Cheeky, bright-faced, languid eyed.

cool and gleaming of teeth, full-moon-faced,
Thick lipped, full mooned, dimpled cheeked,
slender-flanked, full in both shoulders,
Broad shouldered, double layered cloak.
رسُولَa messenger of ملاَحةٍloveliness يَدْعُوsummons فُؤَادِيmy heart

a messenger of loveliness who summons my heart
Messenger of a glance, calling my heart
with the sign of his two bewitching eyes.
With the verse of his two enchanting eyes.
بَدَاhe appeared وَرَنَاand gazed وَمَاسَand swayed فَقُلْso say هلاَلٌa crescent moon
عَلَىupon غُصْنٍa bough تَقَلَّدَhe wore; donned مُرْهَفَيْنِtwo keen-edged swords
He appeared, gazed, and swayed—say: a crescent moon
He appeared, shone, and winked, so say a crescent
upon a bough, wearing two keen-edged swords.
Hanging on a branch, wearing two earrings.
بِسَالِفِwith the earlier وَعْدِهِhis promise وَالصُّدْغِand the temple-lock أضْحَىhe has come to
يُمَاطِلُhe stalls بِامْتِنَاعِby withholding السَّالِفَيْنِthe two foregoing ones
With his earlier promise and his temple-lock, he now
With his previous promise and cheek, he came to
stalls, withholding those two foregoing things.
Procrastinate with abstinence from the two precedents.
وَيَعْطِفُنِيand he bends me بِوَاوَيْwith the two wāws of سَالفَيهhis two sidelocks

And he bends me with the two wāws of his two sidelocks,
And he continues me with his two preceding clauses
according to the rule of following [al-sālinays: unclear in the source].
By the rule of following the two precedents.
يَكَادُalmost الوَهْمُimagination يجرحُwounds مِنْهُof him خدًّاa cheek
حَمَاهُhe protected it بِحَاجِبَيْنِwith two brows; two guards وَنَاظِرَيْنِand two eyes; two watchers
Imagination almost wounds a cheek of his,
Fancy almost wounds a cheek from him
which he guarded with two brows and two eyes.
Protected by two eyebrows and two eyes.
وَصَانَand he shielded سَنَاهُhis radiance عَنْfrom عَيْنَيْthe two eyes of حَسُودٍan envious person
مَخَافَةَfor fear of نَاظِرَيْهِhis two eyes الشَّامِتَيْنِthe two gloating ones
And he shielded his radiance from an envious person's two eyes,
And it protected his brilliance from the eyes of enviers
for fear of that person's two gloating eyes.
Fearing his two gloating eyes.
فَأبْدَىso he displayed شَامَتَيْنِtwo beauty-spots لِشَامِتِيهِto his gloaters
رقيقُdelicate; fine الشامَتَينthe two beauty-spots بِشَامِتَيْنِwith two gloaters
So he displayed two beauty-spots to his gloaters,
So he revealed two gloats to his gloaters
delicate in his two beauty-spots, with two gloaters.
Delicate of waist, free of glance, it showed us
رقيقُslender الخَصرِthe waist حُرُّnoble; fine العِطفِthe flank أبْدَتْrevealed
رَوَادِفُهُhis buttocks لَنَاto us جَبَلَيْthe two mountains of حُنَيْنِHunayn
Slender-waisted, noble of flank—displayed
Its accompanying mountains of Hunayn.
by his buttocks to us were Hunayn's two mountains.
And about it the down of his cheek grows

حَدِيثthe tale of السُّكَّرَيْنِthe two sugars المُسْكِرَيْنِthe two intoxicating ones
And, from his mouth, the cheek-down relates
Narrating the tale of the two intoxicants.
the tale of the two intoxicating sugars.
He bent his cheek into his cheek so that
لَوَىhe curled صُدْغَيْهِhis two sidelocks فِيon; in خَدَّيْهِhis two cheeks كَيْمَاso that

He curled his two sidelocks across his cheeks so that
It reminds me of the bending and the two dots.
he might remind me of al-Liwa and al-Raqmatayn.
And beneath the carnelian of his sipper it showed us
وَتَحْتَand beneath عَقِيقِthe agate of مِرْشَفِهِhis lip أرَانَاhe showed us

And beneath the agate of his lip he showed us
The wolf's gap between the folds of the two calves.
Udhayb of the sand-ridge of al-Abraqayn's passes.
A full moon appeared in Hunayn,
وَلاَحَand he shone بِبَدْرِwith a full moon وَجْهٍِa face فِيin حُنَيْنٍHunayn
وَهَلْand have أبصرتyou seen بَدْراًa full moon; Badr فِيin حُنَيْنِHunayn
And he shone with a full-moon face in Hunayn—
And have you seen a full moon in Hunayn?
and have you ever seen a full moon in Hunayn?
And it sweetened his temple with the jewelry of a mole,
وَحَلَّىand he adorned جِيدَهُhis neck بِحُلِيّwith the ornaments of خَالٍa beauty-spot

And he adorned his neck with the ornaments of a beauty-spot—
And how sweet is emerald between the two stags.
how lovely the emerald in the silver!
And it matched the sun of his cheek with a cup,
وَقَارَنَand he paired شَمْسَthe sun of خَدَّيْهِhis two cheeks بِكَأسٍwith a cup

And he paired the sun of his two cheeks with a cup—
And how splendid is the pairing of the two luminaries!
how splendid the conjunction of the two luminaries!
I seek refuge for his smooth forehead, beautiful

I invoke protection for his forehead, burnished with beauty,
By the Lord of the two easts, the two shining easts.
by the Lord of the two radiant Easts.
And I hope for the sipping of the sipper of his two lips,
وَأرْجُوand I hope for رشفَsipping رِيقَةِthe saliva of مِرْشَفَيْهِhis two lips

And I hope to sip the saliva of his two lips—
And who do I have with purity and the two virtues?
and who can grant me al-Safa and the two Marwas?
