أبَدْرَO Badr (full moon) الدّينِof the faith لاَdo not تَخْشَىfear كُسُوفًاan eclipse
أبَدْرَ الدّينِ لاَ تَخْشَى كُسُوفًا
وَإنْand even if كُنْتَyou are ابنَaged تِسْعٍnine قَبْلَbefore خَمْسِfive
وَإنْ كُنْتَ ابنَ تِسْعٍ قَبْلَ خَمْسِ
O Badr al-Din, do not fear an eclipse,
Do not fear an eclipse, Abderrahman,
Even if your age is nine years followed by five;
Even if born nine before five,
فَإنَّfor indeed الكسفَthe eclipse ينشَأarises عَنْfrom قِرَانٍa conjunction
فَإنَّ الكسفَ ينشَأ عَنْ قِرَانٍ
وَخَدُّكَand your cheek لاَnot أقَارِنُهُI compare it بِشَمْسِto a sun
وَخَدُّكَ لاَ أقَارِنُهُ بِشَمْسِ
For an eclipse arises from a conjunction,
For eclipses arise from nearness,
And I do not compare your cheek to a sun.
And your cheek I compare not to the sun.
