وَغزَالٍ غازَلْتُ ناعسَ طَرْفِهْ
Many a bough whose swaying flank I have shaken,
Many a branch I have swayed to caress its bending,
And a gazelle whose drowsy gaze I have wooed,
And many a gazelle I have flirted with to charm its glance,
وَأقَاحٍand daisies شَقَقْتُI split open عَنْهَاfrom them كِمَاماًbud-sheaths

And daisies whose bud-sheaths I have split open,
And many a morning I have unveiled its veil,
And a dawn whose trailing veil I have let down,
And many an eve I have let down its loosened hair,

And a drinking companion I would ransom—what a companion!
And a boon companion I have ransomed with one better,
And wine whose sweetest unmixed draught I was given to drink,
And many a brimming cup I have given the sweetest of its draught,

And a nightingale that sang with the sweetest voice,
And a singing voice I have captured with the most melodious chant,
In gardens where I inhaled its fragrant scent.
In gardens I have breathed the fragrances of their blossoms,

And I would give my soul for the bead-toothed, dusky-lipped one,
And with my soul I have made the lips accustomed to passion,
The bough is shamed by the grace of his figure:
The branch would be ashamed before the litheness of its bending,

A full moon in whom I beheld such beauty
A perfect moon I witnessed in its glamor,
That description falls short of precisely rendering his gaze.
Beyond words to describe the fluttering of its glance.
