when it saw the garden unveiling a beautiful woman's face.

And birds warbled upon the branch in rapture,

as the boughs swayed, mimicking a slender beauty's dance.

How lovely the gleaming teeth in a dark-lipped beauty's mouth!

the melody of those two eloquent singers, blackbird and gray dove.

the hands of bud-sheaths had inscribed the chapter of concealment.

of emerald, displaying the gold of tawny wine.

when gray doves lamented amid boughs of chatter.

to favor us with white and yellow.

And the jasmine bushes pictured for us

    horizon-towers bearing meteors bent on listening;

or a deep sea embroidered with silver waves; or

    jade domes topped with pearly gravel;

a lattice of pearls over lush green foliage.

    were a bite-mark appearing on a maiden's cheek.

to guard the rose from a wide-eyed beauty's glances.

    chrysolite stems, showing a gray-eyed beauty's glance.

upon green wrists, enchanting the beholder.

were jewels threaded around a graceful beauty's neck.

It glides like dawn along the course of its dark depths,

and coils like a patterned, spotted serpent.

It kept mourning darkness, preaching into the night,

in a dusky robe of black feathers.

in ringing his bell beneath the wing of a pitch-dark night.

love-enslaved and weeping at separation from his kin.
