طَلبْتُI sought الشَّمْسَthe sun لاَnot زُهْرَradiant الدَّرَارِيthe stars
طَلبْتُ الشَّمْسَ لاَ زُهْرَ الدَّرَارِي
فَلِمْso why خالَفْتَdid you act otherwise ياO شَمْسَsun النَّهَارِof day
فَلِمْ خالَفْتَ يا شَمْسَ النَّهَارِ
I sought the sun, not the radiant stars.
I sought the sun, not flowers of pearls
So why did you do otherwise, O sun of day?
Why did you oppose me, O sun of the day?
وَلِمْand why عَوَّضْتَdid you substitute منْin place of تِبْرٍuncoined gold لُجَيْنًاsilver
وَلِمْ عَوَّضْتَ منْ تِبْرٍ لُجَيْنًا
وَأبْدَلْتَand you exchanged القَرَنْفُلَthe carnations بِالْبَهَارِfor narcissi
وَأبْدَلْتَ القَرَنْفُلَ بِالْبَهَارِ
And why did you replace gold with silver,
Why did you exchange dust for mud
and exchange carnations for narcissi?
And replace carnations with spices?
