Her face dispelled the darkness when she appeared,

To guide souls she had led astray in love.

She shone forth, having let down the tresses of her hair,

And I imagined sunlight beneath the darkness.

She unsheathed eyelids like swords; I had never seen—

By my life—eyelids unsheathed like keen blades.

She offered greeting, when love had consumed every lover,

And revived souls that had formerly been put to death.

An oryx, she swayed, her beauty peerless,

And the gray doves praised her when she swayed.

Hers is a pearly mouth, from which Ibn Muzhir transmits,

And a glancing eye, from which Ibn Muqla transmits.

    ألَمْ تَرَ أنَّ الشَّمْسَ بِالغُصْنِ حَلَّتِ

    She appeared, with youth setting her figure swaying;

Do you not see that the sun has alighted on a branch?

She swayed with a ben-tree's two flanks, above which had risen

A crescent brow, shining in the night of her forelock.

The fiery anemones of her cheek delighted me,

So here I am, through it, between fire and paradise.

Ah, may God forgive the eyes, even if they have

Sharpened the edges of those glances to kill me.

And may He not call the temple-locks to account for what

Their deadly scorpions incurred by stinging my heart.

And may He preserve swaying figures from destruction,

Though they are shaken at lovers like brown spears.

And sober minds whose intoxication love has permeated,

Though in love's sobriety lies every drunkenness.

    وَكَيْفَ وَفِي إحْيَا الهَوَى كلّ مَيْتَةِ

    And revive souls that yearning has put to death;

But how, when love's revival holds every manner of death?

My two friends, have you ever seen or heard of

A lover whom longing wasted away before love?

One morning May appeared, her flank swaying,

Like a forenoon sun revealed upon a thicket's branch.

A queen of beauty: under love's law, sweet are

My submission before her, my brokenness, and my abasement,

My sickness, my sleeplessness, my longing, and my tears,

My passion, my torment, my lament, and my groan.

She dwelt in the valley of al-Munhana—my ribs—

And traveled through the reaches of al-Ghada—my heart.

I stood exchanging with her the cups of her reproach,

The morning she withdrew from my friendship and forsook it.

And bending the neck of closeness to her; how often

An impulse called her to union with me, and she came.

So all she did was efface the trace of me which,

From sickness, would not have endured but for passion.

My heart could not resist love,

Nor could my soul find a path to forgetting.

    وَمَا الصبرُ إلاّ مِنْ خِلاَلِي وَحِلْيَتِي

    I shall endure until the time of estrangement ends;

Patience is among my traits and my adornment.

Not everyone who calls has his call answered,

Nor does everyone called respond quickly.

O rider whose resolves fold up the wilderness

On noble camels of longing, never led by reins:

Be gentle with an eye that beholds every soul,

And tender with a heart that receives every form.

And at times I am seen in every great tree and garden,

And at times I am seen in every lesson and sanctuary,

Ravening lions, at a moment of heedlessness.

There are cups there: in their wine is my repose.

And revive traces that had vanished before?

And did the flanks of your branches sway, those

Upon whose boughs the gray doves sang?

Across your richly fragrant garden when it blew?

And did the clouds send you letters in pearls when

And as long as gray doves sing upon a great tree's boughs.
