He smiled, revealing the fragrance of rain-drenched blossoms,

And shone forth, revealing the radiance of a luminous full moon.

And made roses grow in the blaze of his cheeks—

Yet how can roses grow in blazing fire?

And a temple-lock told tales of his rosy cheek,

So it reminded us of al-Hariri's Maqamat.

And the bough showed regard for the beholder of his two sides,

And said, "Such is regard for one's counterpart."

A gazelle—how can his eyes be so eager

To kill me, though they are described as languid?

And what I endure in the dark nights is unknown

To his tresses, yet they are credited with awareness.
