تَوِّجْcrown بِدُرِّwith pearls of الْمَاءِwater هَامَthe heads of الرَّاحِwine
تَوِّجْ بِدُرِّ الْمَاءِ هَامَ الرَّاحِ
وَصُنِand guard اسْتِمَاعَكَyour hearing عَنْfrom كَلاَمِthe words of اللاَّحِيthe reproacher
وَصُنِ اسْتِمَاعَكَ عَنْ كَلاَمِ اللاَّحِي
Crown the heads of wine with pearls of water,
And guard your hearing from the reproacher's words.
وَاسْتَجْلِهَاand behold her شَمْسًاas a sun بِهَالَةِwithin the halo of كَأسِهَاher cup
وَاسْتَجْلِهَا شَمْسًا بِهَالَةِ كَأسِهَا
لِتَرَىso you may see سَنَاthe radiance of الإصْبَاحِdawn فِيin المِصْبَاحِthe lamp
لِتَرَى سَنَا الإصْبَاحِ فِي المِصْبَاحِ
And behold her as a sun within her cup's halo,
To see dawn's radiance in the lamp.
بِكْرٌa virgin تَجَلَّتْrevealed herself فِيin غِلاَلَةِthe sheer robe of دَنِّهَاher wine-jar
بِكْرٌ تَجَلَّتْ فِي غِلاَلَةِ دَنِّهَا
وَكَذَلِكَand likewise الأرْوَاحُsouls فِيin الأشْبَاحِbodies
وَكَذَلِكَ الأرْوَاحُ فِي الأشْبَاحِ
A virgin, she revealed herself in her wine-jar's sheer robe,
And so are souls within bodies.
فَضَّbroke المِزَاجُthe admixture خِتَامَهَاher seal فَاسْتَوْلَدَتْso she brought forth
فَضَّ المِزَاجُ خِتَامَهَا فَاسْتَوْلَدَتْ
مِنْهُby it جَنِينَthe embryo of اللَّهْوِrevelry وَالأفْراحand joys
مِنْهُ جَنِينَ اللَّهْوِ وَالأفْراح
The admixture broke her seal, and she brought forth
By it the embryo of revelry and joy.
صاغَتْshe fashioned شِبَاكَthe nets of حَبَابِهَاher bubbles مِنْfrom لُؤْلؤٍpearls
صاغَتْ شِبَاكَ حَبَابِهَا مِنْ لُؤْلؤٍ
لِتَصِيدَto ensnare بِالأحْدَاقِthrough the eyes وَالأقْداحِand the goblets
لِتَصِيدَ بِالأحْدَاقِ وَالأقْداحِ
She fashioned her nets of bubbles from pearls
To ensnare through eyes and goblets.
طَافَcircled الحَبَابُthe bubbles بِرُكْنِهَاaround her corner وَبِحِجْرِهَاand in her enclosure
طَافَ الحَبَابُ بِرُكْنِهَا وَبِحِجْرِهَا
صَلَّىprayed الشعَاعُthe radiance فَأمَّthen led in prayer بِالأرْوَاحِthe souls
صَلَّى الشعَاعُ فَأمَّ بِالأرْوَاحِ
The bubbles circled her corner, and in her enclosure
The radiance prayed, then led the souls in prayer.
وَبِحَجِّهَاand through pilgrimage to her فَازَtriumphed النَّدَامَىthe drinking companions إذْwhen رَمَوْاthey cast
وَبِحَجِّهَا فَازَ النَّدَامَى إذْ رَمَوْا
بِمِنَىat Mina مُنَاهَاher desires جَمْرَةَthe pebble of الأتْرَاحِsorrows
بِمِنَى مُنَاهَا جَمْرَةَ الأتْرَاحِ
And through pilgrimage to her the drinking companions triumphed, when they cast
At the Mina of her desires the pebble of sorrows.
يَسْعَىhastens بهَاwith her حُلْوُsweet الشَّمَائِلِin manner خَدُّهُhis cheek الْthe
يَسْعَى بهَا حُلْوُ الشَّمَائِلِ خَدُّهُ الْ
هَادِيguide يُصَانُis guarded بِجَفْنِهِby his eyelid السَّفَّاحِbloodthirsty
هَادِي يُصَانُ بِجَفْنِهِ السَّفَّاحِ
One sweet of manner hastens with her; his cheek—the
guide—is guarded by his bloodthirsty eyelid.
يَغْزُوhe assails الحَشَاthe heart مِنْfrom سِحْرِthe enchantment of عَيْنَيْهِhis eyes وَمِنْand from
يَغْزُو الحَشَا مِنْ سِحْرِ عَيْنَيْهِ وَمِنْ
عِطْفَيْهِhis two flanks بِالأسْيَافِwith swords وَالأرْمَاحِand spears
عِطْفَيْهِ بِالأسْيَافِ وَالأرْمَاحِ
He assails the heart; from his eyes' enchantment and from
His flanks come swords and spears.
نَبَتَsprouted العِذَارُthe cheek-down بِوَرْدِon the rose of وَجْنَتِهِhis cheek فَهَلْso, have...?
نَبَتَ العِذَارُ بِوَرْدِ وَجْنَتِهِ فَهَلْ
أبْصَرْتَyou have seen رَيْحَانًاbasil عَلَىupon تُفَّاحِapples
أبْصَرْتَ رَيْحَانًا عَلَى تُفَّاحِ
Down has sprouted on the rose of his cheek—have you
Seen basil upon apples?
وَبَدَتْand appeared بِغُرَّتِهِupon his brow المُنِيرَةِradiant طُرَّةٌa forelock
وَبَدَتْ بِغُرَّتِهِ المُنِيرَةِ طُرَّةٌ
فَعَجِبْتُso I marveled لِلإمْسَاءِat evening فِيin الإصْبَاحِdawn
فَعَجِبْتُ لِلإمْسَاءِ فِي الإصْبَاحِ
And a forelock appeared upon his radiant brow,
So I marveled at evening within dawn.
