Is it honey in the bottle, or wine?

And is what crowns it pearls, or bubbles?

And is it a cheek where modesty may roam,

Or a bright-toothed mouth holding sweet saliva?

And is it lightning flashing within a cloud,

Or the horizon, where a meteor shines?

Or radiant twilight in a sky

Whose skin was fashioned out of crystal?

Or has ruby amid camphor revealed

The sun's face, veiled by the clouds?

This made solid, and that melted within it.

And her veil is woven out of bubbles.

    Guarded and secluded by reason.

With water, blazing fiercer than the flames.

To torment me were his sweet front teeth.

From which al-Shihab recounted the Maqamat.

He deems the torment of my heart right,

And tormenting the lover is what is right.

When love grows tender, reproach grows tender.

And tears their streaming down the cheek.

Howdahs that the riding camels bore away.

Streaming through the spreading tree of darkness.

At times it curls like foam,

And at times rises upright like a sword.

And the veil was drawn aside from her face.

Its eloquent speech holding a faultless melody.

And her necklaces are of the clouds' pearls,

And her clouds of the breeze's fragrance.

And her palaces are of citrus leaves,

And her domes of daisy blossoms.

Her fragrance wafted as sweet scent and perfume—

Does she not trace her lineage to Paradise?

Which the clouds proclaimed with their tongues.

And eyes quiver in the light.

And minds offer praise amid the spreading trees,

Which this address directs toward companions.
