لَوْif عِشْتُI lived فيin الحُبّlove ألْفَa thousand يَوْمٍdays
وَألْفَand a thousand شَهْرٍmonths وَألْفَand a thousand عَامِyears
If I lived in love a thousand days,
And a thousand months, and a thousand years,
وَقِيلَand it were said لِيto me كَمْhow many لَبِثْتَyou stayed يَوْماًdays
مُنَعَّمَenjoying ease البَالِof mind بِالْمَرَامِthrough fulfilled desire
And were asked, “How many days did you spend
With your mind at ease, your desire fulfilled?”
لَقُلْتُI would say يَوْماًa day أوْor بَعْضَpart of يَوْمٍa day
أوْor زَوْرَةَa visit الطَّيْفِof the phantom فِيin المَنَامِsleep
I would say, “A day, or part of a day,
Or a phantom’s visit in a dream.”
