Never did the east wind's fragrance waft in the garden of early dawn,

Without the radiant stars' eyes sinking from sight.

Nor did lightning draw a sword with which to vaunt its might,

Without the garden donning a robe of flowers.

Nor did the black steed of darkness turn back defeated,

Without daybreak's gray steed springing forth in pursuit.

Nor did the sun's face lift its veil,

Without its radiance veiling the face of the moon.

Nor did the blossoms' veiled mouth smile,

Without the morning clouds giving it cups of rain to drink.

Nor did the doves of the grove sing in rapture,

Without making flute and string needless.

Nor did the bān tree bend its swaying limbs,

Without dawn's caller singing upon them.

Nor was a necklace of rain wound around the garden's neck,

Without the branch's leg being ankleted with pearls.

Nor did a face's dawn shine amid the darkness of hair,

Without my witnessing dawn rise in the predawn hour.

Nor did a star-like mole appear in modesty's sky,

Without my recalling the sun's conjunction with the moon.
