    Take to the backs of lofty mounts if you desire high honors,

    And to the brown-shafted lances if you desire high honors.

    And if you desire a sprinkling of a share of wisdom,

    The star is not missing, nor is the dawn concealed.

    I was never among those who accept humiliation as their way,

    When they fail to reach the furthest goals with honor.

    وَهَلْ يَرْتَضِي بِالْخَسْفِ مَنْ كَانَ عاليَا

    My resolve refused anything but ascent to the heights;

    And would one who stood high consent to abasement?

    For not every face shines with cheerfulness,

    Nor is every neck adorned with noble deeds.
