بُلِيتُI was afflicted بلحظٍwith a gaze غَيْرِnot وَافٍfaithful لأنَّنِيbecause I
إذَاwhenever رْمْتُI sought ضَوْءَthe light of البدرِthe full moon غُيِّبَwas hidden فِيin الحُجْبِthe veils
I am afflicted with a faithless gaze, for
Whenever I seek the full moon’s light, it is hidden behind veils.
وَأعجبُand more wondrous منthan ذَاthis أنَّthat عَيْنِيَmy eye مَاnot رَأتْsaw
شَقِيقًاan anemone مُحَيَّاهُits face تَسَتَّرَveiled itself بِالسُّحْبِwith the clouds
And stranger than this is that my eye has never seen
An anemone whose face was veiled in clouds.
