وَاجْعَلْand make شُهُودَكَyour witnesses مِنْfrom وَرْدٍroses وَنِسْرِينِand eglantine
Arise, wed the son of a cloud to the daughter of Zarjūn.
Arise and wed the son of mist to the daughter of basil,
And choose your witnesses from roses and eglantine.
And let your witnesses be roses and nasturtiums.
فَخَاطِبُthen the orator of الطَّيْرِthe birds نَادَىcalled out فِيin مَنَابِرِهِhis pulpits
هُبُّواhasten, all of you إلَىto الرَّاحِthe wine مَاthe space بَيْنَamong الرَّيَاحِينِthe fragrant herbs
Then the birds' orator called out from his pulpits:
The orator of the birds proclaimed from his pulpit,
Hasten to the wine amid the fragrant herbs!
“Fly to the breeze between the two gardens!”
والرّيحُand the wind مَدَّspread عَلَىover الأغْصَانِthe branches إذْwhen نُصِبَتْthey were raised upright

And the wind spread over the branches, as they were raised upright,
And the wind stretched its train upon the branches
A trailing hem, expressing lengthening and softness.
As a flowing robe, expressing gentleness and pliancy.
والرَّوْضُand the garden زَفَّled in bridal procession عَرُوسَthe bride of الزَّهْرِthe blossoms فيin حُلَلٍrobes

And the garden led the bride of blossoms in robes
The meadow escorted the bride of flowers in her robes,
That have revealed her amid ornament and color.
Displayed between embroidery and coloring.
وَالطَّلُّand the dew يَكْتبُwrites فيon طِرْسِthe parchment of الريَاضِthe gardens فَهَلْso, have...?
أبْصَرْتَyou have seen خَطًّاwriting بِلاَwithout حَدْسٍsurmise وَتخمينِand conjecture
And dew writes on the gardens' parchment—have you then
Does the dew write without intuition or conjecture
Seen writing without surmise or conjecture?
On the pages of the garden’s books?
وَعَارِضُand the cheek-down of الظِلّshadow فِيon خَدّthe cheek of الغدِيرthe pool حَكَىresembled

And the down of shadow on the pool's cheek resembled
The shadow playing on the cheek of the pond related
Musk scattered among myrtle leaves.
Musk scattered on leaves of myrtle.
فَاسْتَجْلِso unveil بِكْرَa virgin مُدَامٍwine زَانَهَاadorned her حَبَبٌbubbles

So unveil virgin wine, adorned with bubbles
So take the maiden whose cheek is adorned with love
Like precious pearls, kept hidden away.
Like pearls of precious pearl concealed.

With a graceful maiden—if the camphor of her smile appeared
Along with a maiden whose camphor, if revealed,
To the sun, it would veil itself in the ambergris of dark clouds.
Would shame the sun in the chamber of union.
