وَخَلِيِّand one carefree قَلْبٍof heart قُلْتُI said يَاO
وَخَلِيِّ قَلْبٍ قُلْتُ يَا
خِلِّيَّmy friend مَاwhat حَالُthe condition of الشَّجِيْthe sorrowful one
خِلِّيَّ مَا حَالُ الشَّجِيْ
And to one carefree of heart I said, “O
With a sincere heart I said, "O my friend
my friend, how fares the sorrowful one?”
How fares love's fever these days, my friend?"
فَقَالَso he said لِيto me مُسْتَهْزِئاًmockingly
فَقَالَ لِي مُسْتَهْزِئاً
وَيْحَalas for الشَّجِيِّthe sorrowful one مِنَbecause of الخَلِيْthe carefree one
وَيْحَ الشَّجِيِّ مِنَ الخَلِيْ
So he said to me mockingly:
Mockingly he said with laughter so cold
“Alas for the sorrowful at the hands of the carefree!”
"Alas for love's fever, that friend of old!"
