وَالموْجُ في لُجَجِ البِحَارِ كَأنَّهُ

شَيْبٌ بصدغٍ شَفَّ عنه البُرْقُعُ

And the waves in the depths of the seas are like

Gray hair at a temple, showing through the veil,

Gray hair on a temple laid bare when the turban is removed,

أوْ فضةٌ نُثِرَتْ بِصَحْنِ زُمُرُّدٍ

أوْ فضةٌ نُثِرَتْ بِصَحْنِ زُمُرُّدٍ

أو قَسْطَلٌ فيه الأسِنَّةُ تَلْمعُ

أو قَسْطَلٌ فيه الأسِنَّةُ تَلْمعُ

Or silver scattered on a platter of emerald,

Or silver strewn on an emerald dish,

Or a cloud of dust in which spearheads gleam.

Or a goblet in which blades flash bright.
