وَسَرَى نبت عَارِضِ النَّهَرِ

فِي خُدودِ البطاحْ

And the greenery on the river’s cheek crept

The canes swayed beside the river's shore

across the cheeks of the plains;

In the hollows of the sands

وَانْثَنَى عطْف مَائِسِ الشَّجَرِ

وَانْثَنَى عطْف مَائِسِ الشَّجَرِ

تَحْتَ طَيّ الوِشَاحْ

تَحْتَ طَيّ الوِشَاحْ

and the waist of the swaying trees bent

And bent were the branches of the bending trees

beneath the fold of the sash.
