And some Zanj sang of love when moved
When they were smitten with longing in youth,
by a singer I took for Zarqa’ al-Yamama.
They made a minstrel I reproached with the dove's color.
كَأنَّهُمُas though they وَقَدْand already سكِرُواhad grown drunk وَطَارُواand taken wing

As though, having grown drunk and taken wing,
It was as though intoxicated and carried away they were,
they were blackbirds serenaded by a dove.
Warblers singing to them in the dove-cot.
