وَشَادِنٍand a young gazelle مَاnot رَنَاgazed إلاّexcept وَغَازَلَهُand wooed him
ظَبْيُthe gazelle الكِنَاسِthe thicket shelter وَحَيَّاهُand greeted him وَفَدَّاهُand pledged himself as his ransom
And a young gazelle—never did he gaze without being wooed
Wherever he went, the gazelle of Kenan greeted him,
By the gazelle of the thicket, who greeted him and pledged himself as his ransom.
Praised him, sacrificed itself for him.
الرَّاحُwine رِيقَتُهُhis saliva وَالمِسْكُand musk نَكْهَتُهُhis breath's scent
وَالآسُand myrtle عَارضُهُhis cheek-down وَالوَرْدُand roses خَدَّاهُhis two cheeks
His saliva is wine, and his breath is musk.
The wind was his perfume, musk his scent,
And his cheek-down is myrtle, and his cheeks are roses.
Myrtle his cheek, rose his temple.
وَالزَّهْرُand flowers مَبْسَمُهُhis smiling mouth وَالدُّرُّand pearls منطقهُhis speech

And his smiling mouth is flowers, and his speech is pearls.
Flowers blossomed for him, pearls adorned him,
And his flanks are bān trees, and his breasts are pomegranates.
Loquats tendered him, pomegranates endowed him.
وَاللَّيْلُand night طرتُّهُhis forelock وَالصُّبْحُand dawn طلعتُهُhis countenance

And his forelock is night, and his countenance is dawn.
The night was his veil, dawn his rising,
And the full moon and the sun, in both states, are his slaves.
The moon and sun through it all his servants.
ظَبْيٌa gazelle بهfor him هامَwent mad with love أهلُthe people of الحيّthe quarter قَاطبةًall of them
فكلُّso every مَيْتٍdead man تَرَاهُyou see him فَهْوَso he أرْدَاهُstruck him dead
A gazelle for whom all the people of the quarter went mad with love.
For him the gazelle was sick with love, and all the people of the neighborhood -
So every dead man you see was struck dead by him.
Each dead person you saw was his ransom.
يقولُsays قلبيmy heart عَدَانِيinfected me سحرُthe magic of نَاظِرِهِhis eye
ياoh ليتَwould that شعرِيَmy knowing مَنْwho بالسَّحرِwith magic أعْداهُinfected him
My heart says: 'The magic of his eye has infected me.'
My heart says his charming gaze has bewitched me.
Oh, would that I knew who infected him with magic!
Oh, if only I knew who had cast that spell!
لاَmay ... not واخذhold to account اللهُGod قَلْبِيmy heart فِيfor محبتهِloving him
إذْsince حالةthe state of الحبlove عقبَاهits end ومبُدَاهُand its beginning
May God not hold my heart to account for loving him,
No - may God take my heart in its love for him.
Since love is its state, at its end and its beginning.
For the state of love, its results and beginnings are his.
