وَصَفْرَاءَ كَالدّينَارِ في كأسِ فضَّةٍ

وَصَفْرَاءَ كَالدّينَارِ في كأسِ فضَّةٍ

حَكَتْ خَدَّ مَعْشُوقٍ على خَدّ عَاشِقِ

حَكَتْ خَدَّ مَعْشُوقٍ على خَدّ عَاشِقِ

And a yellow wine, like a dinar, in a silver cup,

Golden like a dinar in a silver chalice

Resembled a beloved’s cheek upon a lover’s cheek.

The cheek of the beloved caressed the cheek of the lover

إذَا شِمْتُ بَرْقاً مِنْ سَمَاءِ عُذَيْبِهَا

إذَا شِمْتُ بَرْقاً مِنْ سَمَاءِ عُذَيْبِهَا

تَذَكَّرْتُ ما بَيْنَ العُذَيْبِ وَبَارِقِ

تَذَكَّرْتُ ما بَيْنَ العُذَيْبِ وَبَارِقِ

When I glimpsed lightning from the sky of its sweet draught,

When I smell a flash of lightning from her Udhaib's sky

I remembered what lies between al-ʿUdhayb and Bāriq.

I recall what's between Udhaib and Bariq
