ومَلِيكَةٍand a queen صَانَتْshe guarded شَقَائِقَanemones خَدّهَاher cheek
مِنْfrom نَاظِرَيَّmy two eyes بِنَاظِرٍwith an eye وبِحَاجِبِand with an eyebrow
And a queen guarded the anemones of her cheek
A maiden guarded the poppies of her cheek
From my two eyes with an eye and an eyebrow.
From my admiring gaze with a glance and an eyebrow
جَزَمَتْshe resolved بِكَسْرِon breaking حُشَاشَتِيmy last remnant of life وَتَحَجَّبَتْand she veiled herself
عَنْfrom عَيْنِthe eye نَاظِرِهَاof her beholder بِرَفْعِby raising الحَاجِبِthe eyebrow
She resolved to shatter what remained of my life, and veiled herself
She was decisive in breaking my enchantment and veiled herself
From her beholder's eye by raising her brow.
From the eyes of her admirer by raising her eyebrows
وَاسْتَأصَلَتْand she utterly destroyed طَيْرَthe bird الفُؤَادِof the heart وَقَدْand already رَمَتْshe shot
بِسِهَامwith arrows لَحْظٍof a glance عَنْfrom قِسِيّbows حَوَاجِبِof eyebrows
And she utterly destroyed the heart's bird, having loosed
And she uprooted the bird of my heart, having shot
Arrows of a glance from the bows of eyebrows.
With the arrows of a glance, despite stern eyebrows
نَادَيْتُهَاI called to her كُفِّيdesist فَنَادَىthen called out لَحْظُهَاher glance
أوَand (interrogative) لَيْسَis not قَلْبُكَyour heart منamong طَيَورِthe birds الوَاجِبِwhat is rightfully due
I called to her, 'Desist!' Then her glance called back:
I called to her "Stop!" and her glance called out
'And is your heart not among the birds that are my due?'
"Is not your heart one of the birds of fate?"
