وَجَمْعٍ فِيهِ بِيضٌ ثُمَّ سُودٌ

أرَى سَبَجاً تَرَصَّعَ بَيْنَ دُرّ

And a gathering with white ones, then black ones—

A bouquet speckled with whites then blacks

I see jet set among pearls,

I see an iris embroidered among pearls

أو الرّيحَانَ فِي السُّودَانِ أبْدَى

أو الرّيحَانَ فِي السُّودَانِ أبْدَى

مَفَاتِيلَ البَنَفْسَج بَيْنَ زّهْرِ

مَفَاتِيلَ البَنَفْسَج بَيْنَ زّهْرِ

Or basil among the black ones, displaying

Or basil revealed among the black ones
