I invoked protection for her بِالْمُرْسَلاَتِwith the sent-forth ones دُمُوعيmy tears
وَحَجَبْتُهَاand I screened her بالْمُورِيَاتِwith the spark-kindlers ضُلُوعيmy ribs
I invoked protection for her with my tears, sent forth,
I protected it with the sent ones my tears
and screened her with my ribs, kindlers of fire.
And I veiled it with the winding ones my ribs
وَعَلمْتُand I knew مَاwhat ألْقَاهُhad cast it سَاحرُthe sorcerer طَرْفهَاher gaze
وَجَهِلْتُand I did not know مَاwhat ألْقَاهُI would suffer it منْof تَفْجِيعِيmy heartbreak
And I knew what the sorcerer of her gaze had cast,
And I knew what was cast by the sorcerer of her glance
yet knew not what heartbreak I would suffer.
And I was ignorant of what was cast of my torment
وَرَوَيْتُand I narrated عَنْon the authority of لِينِsuppleness المَعَاطِفِbodily curves مُسْنَداًa chain-supported report

And I narrated, from supple curves, a chain-supported report,
And I narrated about the softness of the shelters, supported
which I made my intercessor when we met.
I made it in the meeting my intercessor
فَمَتَىso when يُسَاعِدُنِيwill favor me الزَّمَانُtime وَمَاand what مَضَىhas passed
لَمْdid not يَسْمَحْallow لناto us برُجوعِa return
When, then, will time favor me? As for what has passed—
So when does time assist me and what has passed
alas, it has allowed us no return.
Alas, it did not allow us to return
يَاO صَاحبيَّmy two companions قِفَاhalt, you two بِسَلْعٍat Salʿ وَاسْألاand ask, you two
عَنْabout شَمْسِهِits sun هَلْwhether آذَنَتْshe has announced بطُلوعِa rising
O my two companions, halt at Salʿ and ask
O my companion, stand in Sal‘ and ask
about its sun: has she announced her rising?
About its sun, did it announce the dawn
وَاسْتَنْشِداَand request verse, you two جَمْرَthe embers الغَضَاthe ghaḍā tree ومِيَاهَهُand its waters
عَنْabout َبْرِدthe coolness سلوانيmy solace وحَرّand the heat ضُلُوعِيmy ribs
And ask the ghaḍā's embers and its waters to recite
And seek testimony from the embers of sadness and its waters
of the coolness of my solace and the heat of my ribs.
About the coolness of Salwa and the heat of my ribs
واسْتَعْطِفَاand implore, you two بَانَthe bān trees الحِمَىof the preserve وَظِبَاءَهُand its gazelles
لِحَشَاfor the heart الكَئيبِof the sorrowful one وَمُهْجَةِand the soul المَفْجوعِof the grief-stricken one
And implore the preserve's bān trees and its gazelles
And entreat the hermitage of yearning and its gazelles
for the sorrowful one's heart and the grief-stricken one's soul.
For the gloomy arid land and the interior of the anguished
وَاسْتَعْطفَاand seek tenderness, you two فِيin عتبِreproaching مَنْthe one who لَوْif آنَسَتْshe had comforted
مَاnot اسْتَأنَسَfound comfort المَهْجُورُthe forsaken one بِالتَّرْوِيعِin terror
And plead for tenderness in reproaching her who, had she comforted,
And entreat in the reproach of one who, if she would console
the forsaken would not have found comfort in terror.
The abandoned would not be consoled with frightening
وَدَّعْتُهَاI bade her farewell وَالصَّبْرُwhile patience يَهْجُرُdeserts مُهْجَتِيmy soul
مَاhow! كَانَwas أغنَانِيI could have dispensed عَنِwith التَّوْدِيعِfarewell
I bade her farewell while patience deserted my soul.
I bid her farewell while patience deserted my interior
How well I could have done without farewell!
What would console me from the farewell
وَوَجَدْتُand I felt بَعْدَafter شَهِيِّdelicious بَاردِcoolness وَصْلِهَاunion with her
حَرَّthe burning الفِطَامِof weaning عَلَىupon فُؤادِthe heart رضِيعِof a suckling
And after the delicious coolness of union with her, I felt
And I found after the chill of her frigid union
the burning of weaning upon a suckling's heart.
The heat of weaning upon the heart of the infant
شُغِلَwas distracted الرقيبُthe watcher وَسَاعَدَتْنِيand aided me خلوةsolitude
فيin بَثّpouring out شَوْقِيmy longing وَاجْتِلاَءِand revealing هُلُوعِيmy anguish
The watcher was distracted, and solitude aided me
The guard was preoccupied and seclusion assisted me
in pouring out my longing and laying bare my anguish.
In pouring out my passion and disclosing my anxieties
فَضَمَمْتُso I embraced صَدْرَthe breast رِكَابِهَاof her mount فَعَسَاهُso perhaps it أنْthat

So I embraced the breast of her mount, hoping that
So I hugged the stirrups of her ride in the hope that
the tenderness of my wounded heart might spread to it.
The softness of my wounded heart would pass it

And when the clouds have scattered jewels,
And when the clouds scattered gems
they fall upon a lofty abode at al-ʿAqīq.
Upon a sublime place set with carnelian
سَابَقْتُI raced أشْهَبَthe gray steed مُزْنِهَاof her raincloud فيin أفْقِهِits horizon

I raced her raincloud's gray steed across its horizon,
I outstripped the gray of its lightning in its horizon
with a swift chestnut steed of tears upon my cheeks.
With a heap of tears on the cheeks swift

Where the doves above the preserve's bān trees
Where the white doves above the slopes of yearning
sadden you with their warbling and rhythmic cooing.
Captivate you with the trilling and chanting

They sing, and their melody makes plain what was left obscure
They sing so its melody renders eloquent what

The reeds made ambiguous with the reverberating and quivering

O you reproachers, desist! You have only
O blamers, desist, I only called out
called, O mute ones, to one who does not hear.
O mute ones, not hearing

Reproach is not counsel—no! Nor am I a boulder,
Reproach is no loyalty, no, and I am no brute
to be left by it like a humbled, shattered rock.
So I remain from it like a timid wounded one
مَهْلاًgently فَإنَّfor indeed القَلْبَthe heart لَيْسَis not بِقَالِبٍa mold

Gently, for the heart is not a mold,
Gently, for the heart is no mold
and be tender, for patience will not obey.
And gently, for patience is no obedient

My day of longing for the beloved is a whole year:
My day with the beloved is a full year
summer is my heart, and winter my ribs.
Summer is my heart and winter my ribs

I will not turn from loving a tender maiden whose cheek's
I will not refrain from loving a cheek whose
anemone, Nuʿmān, narrates on the authority of Ibn Manīʿ.
Softness narrates about the son of Mani‘
صَحَّbecame sound الغَرَامُpassion بِوَسْطِwithin قَلْبٍa heart قَطَّعَتْshe cut apart
أرَأيْتَhave you seen شَيْئاًanything صَحَّbecame sound بِالتَّقْطِيعِthrough cutting apart
Passion proved sound within a heart she cut apart;
Passion settled in the middle of a heart her
have you seen anything made sound by being cut apart?
Glances cut to pieces—have you seen anything settle with cutting to pieces?
وَلَوَتْand she curled سَوَالِفَهَاher tresses عَلَىover وجَنَاتِهَاher cheeks
كَرطيبِlike fresh آسٍmyrtle للشقيقِto the anemone ضَجِيعِa bedfellow
And she curled her tresses over her cheeks,
If her conversations curled upon her cheeks
like fresh myrtle, bedfellow to the anemone.
Like fresh myrtle for the wretched sleeping partner
أسْكَنْتُهَاI lodged her قَلْبِيin my heart الصَّرِيعَstricken فَيَاso, oh تُرَىone wonders
رَضِيَتْwas she content بِسُكْنَاهُwith dwelling in it مَعَwith التَّصْرِيعِbeing laid low
I lodged her in my stricken heart; I wonder—
I settled her my wounded heart, so tell me
was she content to dwell in it, though it lay felled?
Was she content with residing in it alongside sobbing?
وَهَوَيْتُهَاand I loved her كَالرَّوضِlike a garden يُظْهِرُreveals حُسْنُهَاher beauty

And I loved her, garden-like; her beauty reveals
And I desired her like a garden that shows her beauty
whatever it wills amid repeated farewells.
However much He willed in abundant farewells

And I offered her my soul without excess; will you,
And I confided to her my soul without transgression—and has
O garden, buy me for a season of spring?
O garden, you quenched my thirst with the season of spring?
