وَيومٍand on a day أدْكَنِdark الجِلْبَابِthe cloak أبْدَىrevealed
وَيومٍ أدْكَنِ الجِلْبَابِ أبْدَى
مُحَيَّاthe face of الشمسِthe sun تحتbeneath سماءa sky of غَيْمِclouds
مُحَيَّا الشمسِ تحت سماء غَيْمِ
And many a sable-cloaked day revealed
And on a dark-cloaked day that revealed
the sun’s countenance beneath a cloud-filled sky;
the sun’s face beneath a sky of clouds,
غدوْتُI went forth in the morning بهon it عَلَىunder حُكْمِthe rule of التَّصَابِيacting young
غدوْتُ به عَلَى حُكْمِ التَّصَابِي
أمَزّقُI tear بالمَسَرَّةِwith joy جَيْبَthe neckline of ضَيْمِيmy humiliation
أمَزّقُ بالمَسَرَّةِ جَيْبَ ضَيْمِي
on it I set out beneath the sway of youthful folly,
I went forth that morning, at youthful play’s command,
rending with delight the collar of my oppression.
tearing with joy the neckline of my humiliation.
