أوقدتُI kindled مِنْfrom دمعِthe tears of عَيْنِيmy eye فيin الحَشَاthe breast لَهَبَاa flame
لِيَهْتَدِيso that it may find its way الطيفُthe phantom نَحْوِيtoward me حَيْثُمَاwherever ذَهَبَاit went
From my eye's tears I kindled a flame within my breast,
I lit a fire with tears from my eyes in the darkness
so the phantom might find its way toward me wherever it went.
So that my beloved's spirit may find its way to me wherever it went
وَكَيْفَand how أرْجُوI hope for اهْتِدَاءَthe guidance of الطيفِthe phantom منهُfrom it وَقَدْand already
عَلِمْتُI knew أنَّthat الكَرَىsleep عنfrom مُقْلَتِيmy eye هَرَبَاfled
And how can I hope the phantom will find its way by it, when
And how can I expect his spirit to find me when
I know that sleep has fled my eye?
I know that fate has fled from my eyelids
أحْبَابَنَاour loved ones كَمْhow much أقَاسِيI endure بَعْدكُمْin your absence حَرَبًاanguish
لَوْif كَانَwas يَنْفَعُنِيbenefits me نَادَيْتُI cried out وَاحَرَبَاalas, my anguish!
Our loved ones, how much anguish I endure in your absence!
Oh friends, how much war I suffer after you
If it could help me, I would cry, 'Alas, my anguish!'
If crying out could benefit me, I would have cried out and rebelled
أضرمتُمُyou kindled فِيin صَميمِthe very core of القلبthe heart نَارَa fire of جوًىlove's anguish
لاَnot تَنْطَفِيis quenched بِدُمُوعٍby tears أنْشَأتْformed سُحُبَاclouds
You kindled a fire of love's anguish in the heart's very core,
You ignited in my heart's core a fire of yearning
which tears that have formed clouds cannot quench.
That cannot be extinguished with the tears it created
وَالَهْفَalas for the anguish of قَلْبِيmy heart وَهَلْand can يُجْدِيavail تَلَهُّفُهُits lamenting
إذَاwhen تَصَعَّدَrose حَرُّthe heat of الشَّوْقِlonging وَالْتَهَبَاand blazed
Alas for my heart's anguish! And can its lamenting avail
Oh how my heart pants, though its panting is futile
when longing's heat rises and blazes?
When the heat of passion and yearning flares up
هَلاَّwhy did you not رحمتمْyou pitied كَثِيبًاa sand dune لَمْdid not يَقَرَّfind rest بِكُمْwith you
حَتَّىuntil قَضَىdied وَقَضَىand fulfilled بَعْضَpart of الذِيwhat وَجَبَاwas due
Why did you not pity a dune that found no rest with you,
Why did you not have mercy on a lovesick one who found no rest with you
until it perished and fulfilled part of what was due?
Until he passed away having fulfilled what was destined?
صَبٌّa lovesick man تَحَجَّبَconcealed himself عَنْfrom عُذَّالِهِhis reproachers سَقَمًاthrough sickness
فَهْوَso he الذِيthe one who بِظُهُورِby the manifestation of الشَّوْقِlonging قَدْalready حُجِبَاwas veiled
A lovesick man concealed himself from his reproachers through sickness;
A youth concealed himself from his tormentors out of illness
so he is the one whom longing's manifestation has veiled.
And it is he who has been veiled by the rising of passion and burning desire
وَهْوَand he الَّذِيthe one who مَاnot شَدَتْsang فيin الروضِthe garden صَادِحَةٌa songbird
إلاَّexcept that شَكَاlamented أوْor بَكَىwept أوْor حَنَّyearned أوْor طَرِبَاwas enraptured
And he is the one who, whenever a songbird sings in the garden,
Whenever a voice called out loudly in the meadow
laments, or weeps, or yearns, or is moved to rapture.
He either complained, wept, sighed, or was disturbed
ألَمَّvisited بِيme طيفُهُhis phantom وَهْنًاlate at night فَأعْوَزَهُso it lacked
عِنْدِيwith me وجُودُthe presence of كَرًىsleep بِالدَّمْعِby tears قدalready حُجِبَاwas veiled
His phantom visited me late at night, but could not find
His apparition came to me in weakness, so I lacked
sleep within me, which tears had veiled.
The existence of fate with tears that have been veiled
إنْif عَذَّبَtormented الوجدُpassionate longing قَلْبِيmy heart فيكمُfor you عَبَثًاin vain
فَإنَّthen indeed ذَاكَthat نَعِيمٌbliss وِرْدُهُits draught عَذُبَاwas sweet
If passionate longing torments my heart for you in vain,
If longing torments my heart in you in vain
then that is bliss whose draught is sweet.
Then that is a blissful paradise whose return is sweet
أوْor يسلبsteals الحبُّlove بعضِيpart of me وَالجَمِيعُand the whole لَهُbelongs to it
فَإنَّthen indeed أشْرَفَthe noblest of أجزَائِيmy parts الذيthe one that سُلِبَاwas stolen
Or if love steals a part of me, though all of me belongs to it,
Or if love robs me of some of me, and all of me belongs to it
then my noblest part is the one that was stolen.
Then the most noble part of me that was stolen
أستوْدعُI entrust اللَّهَGod صبراًpatience عَزَّproved difficult مَطْلَبُهُits pursuit
وَالصَّبْرُand patience أعْوَزُthe most elusive مَطْلُوبٍthing sought إذَاwhen طُلِبَاit is sought
I entrust to God patience that is hard to attain;
I entrust God with patience, though attaining it is difficult
and patience is the hardest thing to find when sought.
And patience is the most difficult attainment when sought
