Ibn al-Khalluf’s verse is lofty,
Ibn al-Khaldun has reached the heights
In the horizons of meanings and utterances.
Of meanings and words, so very wise
وَكمand how often حاوَلhe tried وكمand how often سامْhe sought
وَكم حاوَل وكم سامْ

And how often have they tried, and how often sought—
Many have tried as he, to climb
Those other than he—to attain their wishes; yet none succeeded,
Yet none could grasp their heart's desire

Except in Egypt or Levant
The shaykh of the people of the age—and he has said:
The sage of the age, so it's declared
