قصدتَyou intended بيأْسيthrough my despair منكَof you إقذاءَputting grit into ناظريmy eye
فأعفيتَنِيso you spared me منfrom أنْto أذِلّabase myself لمطمعِfor a hoped-for gain
You meant, by making me despair of you, to put grit in my eye;
yet you spared me from abasing myself for a hoped-for gain.
فَلمso ... not تكُyou were إلّاexcept نافعاًhelpful غيرَnot ضائرٍharmful
وَكَمand how often ذاthis (emphatic) أَخذناwe have taken النّفعَbenefit منfrom غيرother than مَنْفَعِbenefit
So you were only helpful, not harmful;
and how often have we drawn benefit from what offered none!
فحسبُكَso enough for you لاdo not تزدَدْadd further قبيحاًa foul deed مجدَّداًrenewed
فإنّfor indeed الّذيwhat قدalready بانhas become clear لِيto me منكof you مُقنِعيis enough for me
Enough, then; do not add a fresh foul deed,
for what I have already seen of you is enough for me.
