مَتىwhen أَرىI see الدّهرَTime قدalready آلتhave returned مصايرُهُits outcomes
إلىto الّذيwhat كانwas مألوفاًfamiliar ومعهوداand well known
When shall I see that Time's fortunes have returned
When will I see fate turn its course
to what was familiar and well known?
To what was once familiar and expected
كمhow long ذاthis أرىI see كلَّevery مذمومٍblameworthy person ولستand I do not أرىI see
بينamong الورىmankind أبدَthe whole span of الأيّامِthe days محموداa praiseworthy person
How long shall I see every blameworthy man, yet not see
How much do I see all that is blameworthy yet I do not see
among mankind, through all time, a praiseworthy one?
Among people forever anything praiseworthy
قالتْshe said أراكI see you بهمٍّwith sorrow لاnot تفارقُهُyou leave it
فقلتso I said همِّيmy sorrow لأنّيbecause I ظَلْتُI remained مَجهوداworn down
She said, 'I see you with a sorrow you never leave.'
She said, I see you worried, never leaving you
So I said, 'My sorrow comes from having remained worn down.'
So I said, my worry is because I remained exhausted
إنْif شئتَyou wish عزّاًdignity بلاwithout ذُلٍّabasement يُطيفcircles بهِaround it
فَاِقطَعْthen cut منَof الحرصِgreed حبلاًa cord كانwas ممدوداstretched out
If you want dignity with no abasement circling it,
If you want honor without disgrace accompanying it
then sever the cord of greed that has been stretched out.
Then sever any rope that has been extended by greed
خذْtake كيفَhowever شئتَyou wish عنfrom الأقطارthe lands قاطبةًall together
وَاِطلُبْand seek منof الرّزقsustenance مطلوباًsought-after وموجوداand available
Take as you wish from all the lands,
Take in any way you wish from all regions
and seek sustenance, sought-after and available.
And seek sustenance, desired and found
فلستَfor you do not تأخذُtake إلّاexcept ماwhat سبقتَyou were destined beforehand بهِfor it
ولاand not تبدّلyou exchange بالمجدودِfor the fortunate one مجدوداa fortunate one
For you take only what was destined for you beforehand,
For you will not take except what you were preceded with
nor exchange one fortunate person for another.
Nor exchange the predetermined for another predetermined
مضىpassed away الثّقاتُthe trustworthy فلاso no عينٌvisible presence ولاand no أثرٌtrace
وأُورِدواand they were led to water منfrom حياضِwatering pools الموتِdeath موروداa watering place
The trustworthy have passed away: no presence, no trace remains;
The trusted ones have passed away, no eye or trace
and they were led to a watering place among death's pools.
And they were led into death's meadows as sacrificial offerings
وأصبحواand they became كهشيمٍlike dry stubble باتspent the night فيon جَلَدٍhard ground
بِعاصِفاتٍby raging gusts منَof النّكباءِthe crosswind مكدوداbattered
And they became like dry stubble that spent the night on hard ground,
And they became like chaff that spent the night in hides
battered by raging gusts of the crosswind.
Blown by storms of adversity into sand dunes
فماso not أبالِيI care وقدand already فارقتهمْI parted from them غَبَناًloss
شُحّاًstinginess منَfrom الدَهرِTime فيin نفعٍbenefit ولاnor جوداbounty
So, having parted from them, I care nothing for loss,
So why should I care, now that I have parted from them stingily
for Time's stinginess with benefits, or its bounty.
Out of fate's stinginess in benefit and generosity
وَلاand not أضمُّI clasp يداًa hand منِّيof mine بغيرهمُwith anyone but them
ولاand not أودُّI love منamong الأقوامِthe peoples مودوداa beloved person
Nor do I clasp my hand with anyone but them,
And I do not join my hands with others
nor cherish any beloved among the peoples.
Nor love anyone of the people as loved ones
ولاand not أخافI fear علىfor مَنwhoever كانwas بعدهُمafter them
نَحساًill fortune وسعداًand good fortune ولاnor بيضاًwhite ones ولاnor سوداblack ones
Nor do I fear for whoever remains after them,
And I do not fear for those after them
ill fortune or good fortune, nor white nor black.
Misfortune or fortune, whiteness or blackness
