What herald announced his death to me? What a herald!

May God never break his fellowship.

He did not alarm me, though the heralds have so often filled

our hearts among us with alarm.

instead, he healed my pains with it.

When I heard what I had been

hoping for, I said: God bless the herald!

It was news that gladdened my heart, though it had been

sorrowful, and it brought fragrance to my dwelling.

I have always hated every bearer of tidings

of death, until the herald announced his death.

He delighted my heart with the good news; may he remain

alive, enjoying what he wishes and what gives him pleasure.

If I could, I would share my lifetime with him,

and then my stores, my pleasures, and my possessions.

He has his due, and dues are acknowledged and observed:

every right he has over me will be kept.

The disease that carried off one who was himself a disease

to the world must be the greatest of afflictions.

The source of hypocrisy and root of

falsehood have departed from us, along with the head of every deceit.

I had been behind a veil, but when he

perished, I cast my veil aside.

    وثوَيتَ الثَّرى فطوّلتَ باعي

    My reach was short while you lived;

when you settled beneath the earth, you lengthened my reach.

    هُ فأَوْلى مكانَ ضَرّي اِنتِفاعي

    You wished me harm, but God sufficed me;

in place of harm, He gave me benefit.

Your arrows were shot at me, but

they did not hurt me: God is among my shields.

All my thanks are for gaining what I had

hoped for through God, not through my own contriving.

I was soon spared the harm you intended,

by God's defense, not by my own.

My barren dwelling filled with abundance

just as I wished, without my seeking pasture elsewhere.

God's fighting on my behalf spared me,

my friend, as you see, from fighting myself.

Fate fought you for me, although

I am brave and you are not brave.

God cast a clearing light into your darkness when it

    had covered all the people.

uprooted, by the grace of God alone.

Hearts filled with the pangs of death

did not falter with grief for you.

You have a scant share of every good thing, for I

measured out evil alone to you by the full measure.

of it, though it passed beyond my own ribs.

of a mirage with its gleaming flash.

May God condemn everyone in whom there is no

good, in hardship or in ease.

does not observe the piety I observe.

and an unearned elevation is like abasement.

You sold me cheaply, though I had not

broken a pledge or reached the time for being sold.

Whoever sold me for a paltry price will learn

what a loss he suffered in the bargain.

If you failed to know my worth and my generosity,

then being lost between your hands became welcome to me.

and miserable is one who gives affection only to see it wasted.

think on it, nor did it constrain me.

and at times it resembled a shepherd's bleating.

Thus time passed: one man alive

and alert, the other dead and no longer calling.

whom you led by deceit toward their deaths?

God forbid that I should be hasty

or answer every caller among mankind.

A fool is he who provokes my tongue,

sharp as a sword's edge on the day of combat,

to bend a spear on the day of battle with a reed pen.

meets only a miser who withholds.

there is no place for lingering hopes to visit.

would fill the valley with noble deeds.

    My following another has never been for anyone;

all people of merit are my followers.

A fool is one who knows nothing

through what he sees with his eyes or hears.

or a heart from which no awareness is gained?

the worst of graves in the worst of places,

a rain cloud of pouring showers visit you.

brought by the hand of the violent wind.
