Turn aside at the effaced, desolate dwelling,
Pass by the abandoned house,
and bid the eye's tears flow.
And let the tears from your eyes flow.

فلو نهيتُ الدّمعَ عن سَحِّهِ

والدّار وحشٌ لم تُطِعْ أمري
For if I forbade the tears to pour,
Even if I forbade the tears from streaming down,
while the dwelling lies desolate, they would not obey my command.
The house is desolate, it would not obey my command.

عَبْرُ هبوبِ الرّيح والقَطْرِ
A dwelling surrendered to decay
A dwelling surrendered to dilapidation,
by the passage of gusting wind and rain.
Weathered by winds and rain.

In its darkness I was forcibly bereft
There I was forcibly separated at nightfall
of the face of the sun or the full moon.
From the sunrise or full moon.

Distraught, but not from the heat of longing's embers;
Yearning - not from the heat of burning embers -
drunk, but not from wine's intoxication.
Intoxicated - not from the rapture of wine.

As though I were in a blaze of sorrow,
It was as if I were in a deep sea of sorrow,
and in a sea of the eye's tears.
And from my eyes tears poured into an ocean.

I turned aside there, spending amid its traces
I have become accustomed to spending therein
what patience I had stored away,
What little patience I had in store.

In noble youths who set out on their mounts
by time's wings in their wake.
With the wings of fate trailing behind them.

They were wronged and made to drink, in suffering's courtyards,
They were wronged and made to drink from the cup of woe
whatever bitterness their enemies wished.
Whatever their enemies willed of bitterness.

Each lean bellied, prominent ribbed,
his skin laden with suffering;
Skin filled with wounds and sores.

he deliberately shaves the bark of his spear-shaft,
They walk upright though hunched in posture
as one unused to whittling whittles a staff.
Like staffs - they who cannot be made upright.

As though, from the long duration of his sorrows,
It is as if from the length of their sorrows
he were driven from safety into fear.
They are led from safety into caution.

Or a lone man estranged from his folk
from his clan for fear of scabies.
By the pity of the protective.

O my companion at the bottom of the valley -
if only it were content to leave me at the bottom!
If only he would be pleased with the very bottom!

filled with rage and unavenged grievance?
Filled with rancor and bitterness.

And evil in its darkness creeps.

I am passed from fang to claw.
Moved from fang to claw.

or a bird left without a nest.
Or a bird with no nest.

Others than its dwellers are in the house, unjustly,
The house was unjustly emptied of its dwellers
and one who never hosted has offered hospitality.
Though it had been inhabited by those known to dwell.

On the green of its pastures.

And the embers have died down for me within its folds;
For me, the embers in its hearth have died out -
glimmers warn of burning coals.
Sparks that warn of burning coals.

Except for her who broke the back.

Rather, weep for Hussein and his family
before him, rank beside rank.
Laid out before him in rows.

They tasted abjection after having tasted
its like with gleaming swords and dark spears.
The like of him in munificence and generosity.

Killing and captivity! My father be ransom for those of you
By the life of the one among you slain
who suffered killing and captivity.
Or taken captive, slain or made captive!

"You lied when you entered them
vessels of treachery—no hospitality at all.
While being vessels of betrayal.

You abandoned the path

Without heeding the clear Book.

Wrongfully by force.

and the faith's fracture is beyond repair.
That breaking faith cannot be mended."

Upon the Messenger of God in his grave!

It is as if he never released your necks
with his hand from the halters of unbelief,
From the shackles of unbelief with his hands.

Without garments, the ink of honor.

After you had been without mention.

After despair - the prime of dawn.

and my safeguard at the hour of the Gathering,
And my protection at the Hour of Resurrection.

Woe unto the son of Sa'd, Omar!
sold God's Messenger for a pittance.
For he sold the Messenger of God for a pittance.

and drew against them the blades of guile.
And drew against them the unsheathed blade of deception.

He is but firewood for Hell and he knows not!

In supporting you with only ample means.

But if what we suffer persists,
then God is best placed to excuse us for it.
Then God is more worthy of excuse.
