Time has not dealt ill with you.

So thank God, heeding and obeying.

    God took one, then spared

for you all the others you love and place your hopes in.

So yield grief to joy, and do not shed

tears over what has passed and gone.

We have no cause for anguish; even if there were,

you would surely be spared being distraught.

We have indeed thanked a hand that spared the root,

though it cut away the branching boughs.

And safe from terror escaped the one whose

escape from it healed the aching heart.

And if we truly reflected on what

    Time does, giving and withholding,

we would reckon its giving as plunder,

and count its sunset as sunrise.

    And Time's nicks, in keen-edged

swords, are found; they do not strike a broken blade.

And when the winds blow, they shake

nothing among us but the lofty edifice.

And for carrying heavy loads, the bearer seeks

only the massive, strong-ribbed one among us.

And calamities strike none but the best

among us when they enter the dwellings.

And if there is nothing but death, one who goes

slowly is like one who dies swiftly.

I am one of you—in ease, hardship, and safety,

    in fear, honor, and humility.

    ءُ وتبقي عليَّ أَن أستطيعا

    And had I been able, no harm would have touched you;

and you spare me the demand that I should be able.
