صبراًpatience عليهاto bear it ولاnor خلَّتْleft لناfor us جَلَداfortitude
This calamity has left us absolutely no
patience to bear it, nor left us any fortitude.
جاءَتْit came ولاwhile no همّcare فيin قلبِيmy heart ولاnor كَمَدٌanguish
فَلَمso it did not تَدعْleave فيهin it إلّاexcept الهمَّcare والكَمَداand anguish
It came when neither care nor anguish was in my heart,
and left nothing there but care and anguish.

O our Saʿd, Time had not found in you, though
it had tested you, an opening to humble you—yet now it has.

Look at Time, when it descended upon us:
through which gate it sought to bring us grief.

It cut away the hump through which we wielded might;
what good did it do, then, to leave limbs and a hand?

Fate has sorely wounded the finest horseman I ever confided in,
in its onward course—and the finest horseman from whom I feared death.
والموتُand death إنْif لمdoes not يزرْvisit يوماًone day ففِيthen on غدِهِits morrow
والمرءُand man إنْif لمdoes not يرُحْgo at evening سعياًhastening إليهtoward it غداgoes in the morning
Death, if it does not visit one day, will on the morrow;
and man, if he does not hasten to it at evening, goes in the morning.

If he who longs for him to live could
ransom him with the soul within his side, he would.

And had he any power—the one led by the muzzle
to drink at death's pools—he would never have gone there.

I do not deem patience wise for myself—how could I ask for it?
And moderation is urged by one who is moderate.

Nor am I content with words for him, while in my liver
the embers of calamity have neither dimmed nor died.

If I recover, I have every rhyme at hand,
following one another; he who promised has guaranteed fulfillment.
