The reproachers fell silent over grief for you, and yielded
The bereaved are silent in grief and resigned,
when they saw that consolation was forbidden.
When they saw consolation is forbidden,

How heedless the reproachers are of what lies within:
Reproachers did not neglect the offender of propriety,
searing pains whose embers blaze!
Whose embers of censure flare up,

Had they been fair, they would have apologized, though I defied them
Had they been equitable they would have excused me,
and rejected their counsel, for I am love-stricken.
And I refused their advice for I am enamoured,

What a difference between us: you enjoy ease while I am afflicted,
How you live in comfort while I suffer,
or you remain safe from wounds while I am wounded.
Or you are safe from censure while I am muzzled,

In my heart is the burning anguish of calamity,
you know nothing of, but my heart knows better.
You know naught of it though my heart knows best,

in your rock, is one whose rock is battered and chipped.

Exhausted, so it was said: That is destined and decreed,

The night of burning in it and my day of blaze,

Remain whole, never to be divided,

Dragging the train of wealth then impoverishing,

Do not wonder at a critic disparaged and censured,
the marvel is one kept sound and safe.
The wondrous is the corrected and the endorsed,
