ألا لا تصِدْني بإطماعةٍ

ألا لا تصِدْني بإطماعةٍ

فلستُ على طمعٍ مقبلا

فلستُ على طمعٍ مقبلا

Take heed: do not ensnare me with an enticement,

Do not try to entice me with greed

for I do not come forward in hope of gain.

For I do not incline towards greed

فإنّيَ ممّنْ إِذا سمتَه

فإنّيَ ممّنْ إِذا سمتَه

قبيحاً يُذَمُّ به قال لا

قبيحاً يُذَمُّ به قال لا

For I am among those who, when you demand of them

I am of those who if you attribute

a shameful deed that brings them blame, say 'No.'

Something ugly to him, says no

وما ليَ في الذّلِّ من موطنٍ

وما ليَ في الذّلِّ من موطنٍ

ولا أجعل الفُحشَ لي منزلا

ولا أجعل الفُحشَ لي منزلا

And I have no dwelling in humiliation,

I have no place for humiliation

nor do I make indecency my abode.

Nor make debauchery my abode

ومُرٍّ بلا دَنَسٍ أصطفيه

ومُرٍّ بلا دَنَسٍ أصطفيه

على ما به دَنسٌ إِنْ حَلا

على ما به دَنسٌ إِنْ حَلا

And I choose what is bitter yet unstained

And bitter without blemish I choose

over what is stained, even if it is sweet.

Over that which with blemish adorns

أُصيبتْ مقاتلُ كلّ الرّجال

أُصيبتْ مقاتلُ كلّ الرّجال

وما أن أصابوا لِيَ المقتَلا

وما أن أصابوا لِيَ المقتَلا

The vital spots of all men have been struck,

The warriors of all men are stricken

yet they have not struck my vital spot.

And not that they inflict me with death

وكم ذا فرجتُ لهمْ ضيّقاً

وكم ذا فرجتُ لهمْ ضيّقاً

وكم ذا كفيتُ لهمْ مُعضِلا

وكم ذا كفيتُ لهمْ مُعضِلا

And how often I have relieved a hardship for them,

And how many a strait I unfasten for them

and how often I have handled a thorny problem for them!

And how many a knot I untie
