فطيّبso it sweetened رَيّاهاher fragrance المقامُthe Station وضوّأَتْand she illuminated
بإشرافهاby her appearance بينbetween الحطيمal-Hatim وزمزماand Zamzam
So the Station sweetened her fragrance, and she shed light
Her dwelling pleased, for she purified it,
by her appearance between al-Hatim and Zamzam.
Quenching with her presence amid the rubble and Zamzam.
فياso, O ربِّmy Lord إنْif لقّيتَYou grant وجهاًa face تحيّةًa greeting
فحيّthen greet وجوهاًfaces بالمدينةِin Medina سُهَّماwan
So, O my Lord, if You grant a face a greeting,
So my Lord, if you meet a face with greeting,
then greet the wan faces in Medina.
Then greet the faces in the city, one and all.
تجافينthey shunned عنfrom مسّthe touch of الدَهانanointing oils وطالماand for a long time
عصمنthey protected عنfrom الحِنّاءِhenna كفّاًa palm ومِعْصَماand a wrist
They shunned the touch of oils, and long
They have long shunned the touch of makeup and
kept palm and wrist untouched by henna.
Their palms and wrists have been protected from henna.
وَكمand how many مِنof جليدٍa steadfast man لاnot يُخامرهtakes hold of him الهوىpassion
شَنَنَّthey unleashed عليهupon him الوَجْدَardent longing حتّىuntil تتيّماhe became love's thrall
And how many a steadfast man, untouched by passion,
And many an icy heart, not stirred by passion,
they assailed with longing until he became love's thrall.
Which ardour has attacked till left in solitude.
أَهانَhe abased لهنّfor them النّفسَthe soul وهيthough it was كريمةٌnoble
وألقىand he imparted عليهنّto them الحديثَthe words المُكَتّماkept secret
He abased his soul for them, though it was noble,
It has degraded noble souls, however cherished,
and revealed to them the words he had kept secret.
And whispered to them conversations concealed.
تسفَّهْتَyou acted foolishly لمّاwhen أنْthat مررتَyou passed بدارهاby her dwelling
وعوجلتَand you were forestalled دونbefore الحِلْمِcomposure أنْto تتحلّماyou feign composure
You acted foolishly when you passed her dwelling,
You scoffed when you passed by her house,
and were overtaken before you could even feign composure.
And rushed, lacking patience, to make fun.
فعُجْتَso you turned aside تقرّيyou examine دارساًeffaced مُتَنكّراًunrecognizable
وتسألand you question مصروفاًbarred عنfrom النُّطقِspeech أعجماmute
So you turned aside to examine an effaced, unrecognizable ruin,
So you came questioning, disguised and secretive,
and questioned a mute thing barred from speech.
Asking a mute about speaking a foreign tongue.
وَيومَand on the day وَقفناwe stood للوداعfor farewell وكلُّناand each of us
يَعُدّreckons مُطيعَone obedient to الشّوقِlonging مَنthe one who كانwas أحزماmost prudent
And on the day we stood to say farewell, each of us
And the day we stood to bid farewell, each one
judged the one who obeyed longing the most prudent.
Deeming the obedient of passion the wisest.
نُصِرتُI was aided بقلبٍby a heart لاnot يُعَنَّفis rebuked فيin الهوىlove
وَعيناًand an eye متىwhenever اِستَمْطَرْتُهاI asked it for rain مَطَرَتْit rained دماblood
I was aided by a heart unrebuked in love,
I gained support from a heart not harsh in love
and an eye that, whenever I asked it for rain, rained blood.
And tears, that when I summoned them, flowed copiously.
